Sometime being a teacher can take one away from your family, but in return teachers gain new family members with heir students and co-workers. After retiring, many teachers wonder what’s become of their students and counterparts.

Ron Schultz wondered exactly this when he retired from the Ferndale School District in 2003, so he founded the Ferndale Association of Retired Teachers (F.A.R.T.). The retired science specialist said the acronym F.A.R.T. came to him in the middle of the night.

When the group first began, it was four to five individuals meeting on a regular basis. After a few gatherings, Schultz took control and started inviting other Ferndale retired teachers to the meetings.

F.A.R.T. has since grown to 25 members and meets for breakfast on the first Friday of every month
at Apovini’s in Clawson. “The purpose of the group was really to create a time and a place where we could meet, stay in touch with each other, and preserve our professional friendships.” Schultz
says. “We also get to know each other in a personal way, outside of the work environment. We share
news with each other such as trips we’ve been on, something about our grandchildren. We might share things about book and movie recommendations that we’ve seen or read and just good conversation laced with a little gossip.”

The group also discusses past students and feeds off their success stories. “We always share any news we have about students and their families.” Schultz admits. “Students we may have had and the success of some kids. Somebody will always come in and say ‘Did you hear about so and so? Well, he graduated from such and such and he’s going to be a doctor.’ And it really makes you feel good.”

In some cases, Schultz himself runs into past students while running errands. “They pop up all over the place and you’re just so pleased to see they’re doing well and you bring that back and share it with everybody.” Schultz says.

Almost 80% of F.A.R.T. members are retired elementary and middle school teachers from the Ferndale School District. A lot of members have taught 25 to 35-plus years. Most retirees began teaching in Ferndale or taught the majority of their years in Ferndale. A few members taught the same families through three or more generations.

Several F.A.R.T. members know one another from working in the same building, district meetings, and school related events. New member Christine Sorowka said she heard stories about some members from students. “It has been wonderful for me because some of these teachers I didn’t know personally, or even professionally, but I would hear about them because the elementary schools fed into the middle schools. I would hear about Mr. Burke or Mrs. Grady and now I actually get to know the person and it’s just so nice and it’s a nice thing to do on Friday. You find out things about people you never knew.” Sorowka says.

Sorowka taught middle school and high school math in the Ferndale School District for 37 years.

Shultz and Sorowka confess they miss teaching, and say teaching has drastically changed from when they started. “I’m thankful that I’m out of it now because I can’t teach the way they would want me to teach now. I don’t think they are teaching. They’ve lost the idea that you need to inspire kids, motivate them, bring them to education, and make it something that they want to do. And that means you don’t start off with facts and figures. Education is really about motivating kids, inspiring them to want to learn, and then teaching them how to learn.” Schultz says.

F.A.R.T. members still go by the school schedule and take off summers. They even cancel breakfast if school is closed due to bad weather. In addition to professional networking, Schultz said the group provides encouragement and support to members when needed. They even pay their respects when retirees pass away by raising their glass for a toast in their honor.

When Schultz isn’t busy with F.A.R.T., he enjoys oil painting, nature photography and playing in his garden.

The Boston Tea Room has something for everyone, according to owner Heatherleigh Navarre. “We like to say that we are a bookstore, a tea room, and that we sell products for your spiritual journey, no matter what journey that is.” Lee said.

ff12678_Page_1_Image_0001Navarre opened the first Boston Tea Room in Wyandotte and a second store in Ferndale in 2009. She outgrew the space after five years and moved across the street to a bigger store two years ago. “We opened up a second location on this side of town because we had a lot of clients who, honestly, didn’t want to have to drive all the way downriver. So they kept really encouraging and asking for a shop on this side of town,” Navarre said. She says Ferndale’s downtown atmosphere is a good fit and attracts a lot of business. “We have a lot of people who walk in the shop just because they see all the beautiful crystals, jewelry, or candles in the window, and they may not have any idea that we’re doing tarot card readings or psalm readings behind the curtain, but they’re really intrigued by what they see. So we have a lot of clients that just come in to shop or to browse,” Navarre said.

The Boston Tea Room offers over 60 mostly organic loose-leaf teas, and has complimentary tea of the day for patrons. “I have people who come in every day just to see what tea is in the pot and we love doing tea tastings and that kind of thing. So we really have something for everyone. We’ve got the retail and we’ve got the services. We also have the tea cafe area where people will come in and sit and chat with each other,” Navarre said.

ff12678_Page_1_Image_0003The Boston Tea Room aims to provide spiritual support and items such as cards, crystals, books, CDs and DVDs to help nurture people on their spiritual journey, no matter their chosen religion. “So if you come from a Catholic upbringing, we have The Boston Tea Room: Helping Guide People on their Spiritual Journey jewelry with the saints on it or little pocket saints that you can carry with you. If you’re exploring the Buddhist path or Buddhist philosophy we have Buddhist mala beads and statues and that kind of thing. If you’re interested in investigating earthcentered, pagan traditions we have books and items for that,” Navarre explained.

The tea room also offers home and office blessings, meditation classes, tarot classes, tea tastings, mediumship classes, how to read the crystal ball, how to read tea leaves, and much more. “One of my favorites is we’re combining the new trend of adult coloring with the tarot. It’s like an adult coloring tarot session where your coloring a tarot card and you get a little mini reading of what it means,” Navarre said.

Navarre is a big supporter of Michigan artists and has rotating art shows. The Boston Tea Room sells items by Michigan artists such as jewelry, pottery, and embroidered tea towels to name a few.

The Boston Tea Room is located at 224 West 9 Mile Road. Operation hours are Monday to Saturday from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Sundays from noon to 6:00 P.M. Call (248) 548-1415 or visit them on the web at www.bostontearoom.com

The Avenue of Fashion (located one mile west of Woodward Avenue on Livernois between 7 Mile and 8 Mile) has been revived and is fast becoming, again, one of Detroit’s shopping hotspots. Although some retailers have long been a staple in the area, new businesses have been flocking to the area even more in the last few years.

ff11640_Page_1_Image_0004Rufus Bartell has been instrumental in recruiting businesses to the historic district. Bartell opened Simply Casual, a boutique that sells both women’s and men’s clothing, in 1996. He says Simply Casual is a lifestyle store “for people who work hard and play hard.” He believes Detroit’s fashion has a unique style, and though he sells Detroit style clothing, he pushes the limits to bring new ideas to the city. “We have a style very unique on its own, with very different kinds of pockets. Weather influences how a lot of Detroiters dress and their simple style and taste,” Bartell explained. He collaborates with local designers and international designers from all over the world, including London, Italy, and Turkey, to name a few. Bartell says Detroit fashion is all over the place, and considers it a dress-up town. “We’ve always had a very stylish caché, dating back to our late, great Mayor Coleman Young, who was always dressed to the nines anytime you saw him,” Bartell said. In addition to clothing, Simply Casual sells bath and body products and candles made by Detroit companies.

ff11640_Page_1_Image_0002Other boutique owners on the Avenue of Fashion have also been influenced by Detroit’s creative style. Jackie Terry, owner of The Style Gallery, also pushes to the bar on what she considers Detroit fashion. “I don’t conform to what is expected from an inner city boutique. I pride myself on doing cutting edge designs, not the norm.” Terry said. She opened The Style Gallery in 2002, shortly before graduating from Wayne State University with a B.A. in fashion design and merchandising. The posh boutique’s first location was in the New Center One Building. Terry decided to relocate to Avenue of Fashion in 2011 after friends who own salons there convinced her to move. Terry says she’s happy with the area and feels there’s a good camaraderie amongst business owners. She’s also seen an increase in sales and is excited about growing her clientele. Terry creates outfits with two other designers, and works with manufactures from all over the U.S., including New York and California. The Style Gallery predominately sells women’s clothing, but also offers custom ordered men’s pieces such as shirts, suits, blazers, and hats.

ff11640_Page_1_Image_0003There are also stores on the Avenue of Fashion that exclusively sell men’s clothing, for example Flagship Boutique, owned by Tarik Haygood and Joseph Lawton. The pair opened the boutique almost four years ago, and make all their t-shirts on location. Haygood owns the brand District 81 and Lawton owns the brand Joe’s Coney Island, both of which are sold at the boutique. In addition to selling t-shirts, sweatshirts, blue jeans, and jackets, the store also sells CDs by Detroit artists.

Other clothing stores in the area include Teasers Boutique, Times Square Men’s Clothing, Mitchell’s on the Ave, Destiny’s Closet, E.X. Change Apparel and many, many more. As the Avenue of Fashion continues to make its way back to being a shopping staple in Detroit, more businesses will flock to the area. Check it out, because there’s something for everyone!

Screen Shot 2015-10-20 at 11.41.37 AMDEALING WITH THE LOSS OF AN INFANT is hard and can be an emotional roller coaster for families. Having comfortable surroundings in the hospital during that time gives families time to grieve together.

In 2008, Tracy Roberts was five months pregnant when she and her husband lost their twin boys. To cope, Roberts began attending a support group at Beaumont Hospital. In January 2009, Roberts, Amy Allen and Anna La Fountain founded Angel Kisses. All three had suffered late- term pregnancy loss, and all were interested in raising awareness of stillbirth and providing emotional support to families.

Initially, the nonprofit worked with Beaumont Hospital exclusively. “We used all of our money in the first four years to give back to Beaumont. With that money, they were able to create a separate waiting room for families who had experienced stillbirth, so they didn’t have to wait in the delivery room where all the parents were excited that they were having live babies,” says Roberts. These types of rooms weren’t available to Roberts and vice president Jeffery Thomas when he and his wife Nicole (who is the treasurer of Angel Kisses) lost their baby girl.

Angel Kisses has since refocused its mission and now concentrates solely on fundraising. “Up until about three years ago we focused on not just fundraising, but also putting programs together and doing a
whole bunch of stuff. But about 2012 we later we decided we were going to fundraise for non-profits, hospitals, organizations and individuals who were just in the process of starting a support group, or some other way to help people in Michigan who have experienced stillbirth as well,” says Roberts.

Since its inception, the nonprofit has raised over $105,000; $30,000 has been given as grants in the past two years and the rest donated to Beaumont Hospital. “We do the fundraising and then give it out as grants to other organizations,” says Thomas.

The first year of its new mission the nonprofit raised money for Beaumont nurses to attend a conference in Kalamazoo called “Resolve Through Sharing,”giving “them a chance to learn more about how to help grieving parents. The nurses are really like the first line there,” says Thomas. Last year the nonprofit donated money to Metro Detroit Share, which provides memory boxes to hospitals for parents.

This year, Angel Kisses is providing grants to six charities and will have announced the
winners at the Fourth Dress Like Devils & Run for the Angels 5K Run/1M Fun Walk on Saturday, October 3.

“It’s all part of the fundraising cycle, so the money goes to raising money for the charities that we’re supporting,” says Thomas. Coffee, fruit, and bagels were provided. A small award ceremony was held for the top three finishers for men, women, and kids. After the race, the annual balloon release took place at Roseland Park Cemetery, which also sponsors the event.

“That’s a ceremony where people write messages to the babies that they lost, or anyone that they know may have lost their children,” says Thomas. Roberts explains that many family members besides parents come to support and that’s important.

The healing process can be a long journey for parents who’ve suffered the loss of a stillborn baby. “We have people who’ve attended our fundraisers that are 60-70 years old that have finally been able to talk about the loss they had 50 years ago, because it’s so different from what they did back then and what they do now,” says Roberts. Acknowledging the situation by talking about the baby and saying their name is important and helps parents cope.

Angel Kisses has big plans for 2016 and has already begun planning their Annual Fundraiser and Silent Auction for Saturday, February 20, 2016. For more information about the race, email Jeffery Thomas at jefferythomas@angelkisses.org.

Heather Cutlip, owner of Little Lotus Wellness, says that yoga is a brain training exercise that “forces your mind and body to be calm in a stressful situation.” Cutlip began doing yoga as a way to cope with her stressful job as a restaurant manager. The benefits of yoga, she said, led her down the path to discover the world of wellness. “It really does start to apply to your everyday life. So you can kind of take it off the mat and learn to be more reflective instead of more reactive.”

Later, she enrolled at Irene’s Myomassology Institute in Southfield where she received her license in massage therapy. Soon after, she began looking for a space to start her business. Friends suggested Cutlip check out 195 West 9 Mile. “As soon as I found this location, it totally made the decision for me,” Cutlip said. Originally from the East Side of Detroit, Cutlip said she always loved Ferndale. “I just got the vision in my head right away and said, ‘okay, this is it,’ and everything just flowed really easy from there.”

Little Lotus Wellness opened in May 2014, and business has been growing thanks to word-of-mouth. “I think intimacy is what draws a lot of people here.” Cutlip said. The average number of students per class is five, but the studio can hold eight per session. In addition to Cutlip, there are four other instructors at Little Lotus. The Yoga Basics and Yin Yoga classes are the most popular at Little Lotus right now. Cutlip iintroduced a new class in January at her studio called Rebel Warrior, which she describes as “yoga on steroids.” Classes change seasonally to provide a variety of options for students.

Creating a calming atmosphere for each session is very important at Little Lotus. Music, candles, dim lighting, and a small bamboo fountain are just a few of the tools Cutlip uses to construct a stress-free environment for students.“We wear all these labels every day. So when people come into class it’s time to start shedding these labels. Just get down to you. In here you’re not a co-worker, you’re not a mother, you’re not a husband or a wife. You just kind of focus on yourself.” Cutlip explained.

Yoga classes and massages can be purchased in packages. Yoga packages come in sets of 5, 10, and 15 classes. There’s also an unlimited yoga package available for $99 a month.

Private yoga group classes for bachelorette parties, office parties, and more are now available and can be catered to the group’s needs. A meditation class meets every Sunday at 11:00 A.M. The class is free, but donations are appreciated. In addition to yoga and massages, Cutlip has many guests from the wellness community, such as life and health coaches, performing workshops at Little Lotus. Other workshops include intro to essential oils, mala bead making, and stress reduction. There’s also movie night, once a month, where a film about yoga is shown in relation to its history, new practices, health benefits, and more.

WOULD YOU RATHER DRINK just because, or drink for a cause?

Ferndale’s Pub Crawl has donated more than $150,000 to local charities such as the Michigan AIDS Coalition, the Ferndale Community Foundation, Fern Care and many more for more than a decade. “Different years, different charities.” says Craig Covey, founder and coordinator of Pub Crawl.

Covey started Pub Crawl in 1996. “We had formed a gay residents association in Ferndale called F.A.N.S.,” says Covey. “In addition to political work and civil engagement, we wanted to do social activities. So I came up with the idea of a Pub Crawl.”

The first Pub Crawl included a few bars and 36 people attended. Covey said everyone had such a great time they decided to make it an annual event. The Pub Crawl was opened to the entire community in its third year. “It started off as a gay community social event. Everyone was welcomed, but it was predominantly gay the first couple of years.” says Covey. In its fifth and sixth years, tourists started attending the event. “As the city grew, as downtown grew, we kept adding clubs and bars.” says Covey. Some of the venues have partnered with Pub Crawl since the beginning such as Danny’s Irish Pub, Como’s, SOHO, Rosie O’Grady’s, and Sneakers. Covey and his team are inviting all the new bars in Ferndale to participate in the 2015 Pub Crawl, such as The Fly Trap and Zeke’s Rock and Roll BBQ.

According to Covey, there has never been an arrest of a Pub Crawl attendee since its inception. He credits this success to educating bar hoppers on the dangers of drunk driving and by partnering with companies to drive people home. “Over the years we found different companies to provide rides. We also encourage people to stay in Ferndale and stay with a friend. We’ve had people camp out in back yards in tents.” Planning an event of this scale every year can wear on a person, but Covey said it’s the sense of community that makes it worthwhile. “The most fun part is the people. They have a blast and they meet new people. They’re very friendly, so there’s a lot of bonding.”

The 19th Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl is Friday, July 31 at Twist Night Club located at 22901 Woodward Avenue. Registration is from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and all participants must be 21-years-old to register. Covey invites companies to sponsor this community event. Registered sponsors for the 19th Annual Pub Crawl so far are Garden Fresh Gourmet, Rosie O’Grady’s, Pearl Vodka, Thursdays, Twisted Tavern,

Uber, and Between The Lines Newspaper. For more information about the 19th Annual Ferndale Pub Crawl visit www.ferndalepubcrawl.org. The website will be updated daily with new details. To sponsor this event or become a vendor contact Craig Covey at coveyc@oakgov.com or Monica Mills at mmills@michiganaidscoalition.org.

June 6

There’s no better childhood memory than riding your bike around the neighborhood with friends after school. The summer breeze that flows across your face while riding a bike is like no other. For more than seven years the Ferndale Recreation Department, Rotary Club, Police and Fire Department has been helping the community get ready for bike season, and 2015 is no different. Ferndale’s Annual Bike Rodeo will take place on Saturday, June 6 from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Ferndale High School. It’s designed for children to come and learn about the safety, and fun, of riding a bike.

“In the past several years we have put this event on in conjunction with our youth day softball opening day.” says Jill Manchik, recreation director. An opening day ceremony at the high school has been planned on June 6 as well.

The Bike Rodeo will have its usual activities including: a free bike skills test provided by the police department; free bike inspection provided by Downtown Ferndale Bikes; free bike helmets (kids must bring bike for free helmet) provided by the Rotary Club; free bike license (for Ferndale residents only), and a free fire safety house tour, pending the fire department’s availability.

This year the Recreation Department welcomes sponsors that want to give away food and drink to attendants (sponsors are not permitted to sell products).

For more information about Bike Rodeo visit www.ferndalemi.gov or contact Jill Manchik at jmanchik@ferndalemi.gov.

Attorney Erica Moise, 32, says she always wanted to practice law because she believe in civil rights. “I figure this is a great route to go in terms of being able to help people, to help change the laws, and help those who are disenfranchised.” Moise says.

Since October 2011, Moise has ben actively practicing criminal defense law. The legal system, she says, doesn’t always get to the root of the crime, which is sometimes drug and alcohol addictions. “That’s a big problem I see within the criminal justice system, is how we’re treating that problem.” mouse said. She wants to help her clients by providing a full serves law firm. “If somebody comes in with an addiction issue and legal problem, I can connect them to resources such as rehab facilities.” Moise says.

After graduating from Eastern Michigan University and then Wayne State’s law school program, Moise worked at a few law firms but is now self-employed. She plans to open an office for Moise Law later this year, hopefully in  Ferndale. Moise’s passion and drive for criminal defense mirrors her pursuit for LGBT legal rights. An activist for the LGBT community, Moise said it was her personal struggle with her own sexuality that led her to that role. “I came out as gay when I was 14 years old. So, having that experience so young, and kind of fighting the world, it really pushed me in this direction.” Moise said. “It’s been a lot of progress over the last 18 years and we’ve come so far from when I was a little 14-year-old in high school.” Moise said her law practice and activisms in the LGBT community both provide people with help. “But those two roles go together because when you become a defense attorney you are, in a sense, and activist for someone, You’re defending their rights, you’re trying to help them through the legal system, which can be very, very tricky.”

In addition to advocating on behalf of the LGBT community as president of the Stonewall Bar Association (a Michigan LGBT Bar Association,) Moise is also creating partnerships with businesses to expand the knowledge of LGBT law related issues. Moise, in conjunction with Affirmations, The Gender Identity Alliance Network, and Equality Michigan, are in the process of creating a coalition to provide LGBT law assistance. “By the Fall we want to get training in place for attorneys to handle LGBT clients.” Moise said.

Likewise, Moise is working with Jocelyn Benson, dean of Wayne State’s Law School, to implement a new program that would train lawyers in Michigan how to take LGBT clients on their issues and the law. Moise said a combination of Wayne State’s midtown location and urban setting give students a secial experience. “You get a lot of variety, especially with law, of real life experiences and real life settings.”

Moise Law can be reached at 248-629-0573. Business hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday thru Friday. Moise is available after hours or for emergencies. Email: erica.moise@gmail.com

The City of Ferndale’s Gerry Kulick Community Center provides activities and opportunities for residents of all ages. “Anywhere from three years of age all the way up to 80-something.” said recreation supervisor Sara Distelrath. The community center has a gym, computer room, senior group, youth leagues, adult leagues, youth programs, fitness studio, art studio, a lunch program and multipurpose rooms available for rent for special events. Kulick is also home to the Boys & Girls Club of Ferndale.

Membership is not required to enjoy the community center’s programs, but is offered for the Fitness Studio, Kids Corner, and Senior Group for a fee. “We don’t have a membership that a family has to pay. You only pay for what you want to do.” Distelrath said. Classes and programs offered at the community center include belly dance, Hawaiian dance, Zumba, Hatha Yoga, and Taoist Tai Chi. New classes are added on a daily basis. Youth leagues options are baseball, softball, and soccer. Classes and league schedules are available at www.ferndalemi.gov.

The community center was upgraded in 2014 . The mats in the Kids Corner room have been replaced with a new foam floor. The bright colors and puzzle-like pieces match with the décor and it makes the bounce house look even more inviting. The Kids Corner is for crawling infants up to age five. Parents can purchase passes during the Kulick’s business hours for their kids to play. Another upgrade to the community center is online registration. “We are currently switching over to a new registration software,” Distelrath said. “Starting December 8 they’ll be able to register for any programs, facility reservations…anything.” To enroll in classes, leagues, programs, and more at the community center visit apm.activecommunities.com/ferndalerecreation.

The Peewee program has expanded its class list in 2014. “We’ve been doing a lot of peewee classes for ages three and four. It’s been received very well amongst the community.” Distelrath explained. “It’s basically an introduction to sports for kids, getting them active at a young age.”

The Community Center has winter events planned for the remainder of 2014. A Winter Break Camp is scheduled for December 22, 23, 29, and 30. A week of activities have been planned for children on winter break from school, including field trips to the Hazel Park Ice Arena, Chuck E. Cheese, Henry Ford Museum, and Emagine Theater Star Lanes. The camp is from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. and the fee is $30 per day, per child. Registration closes on Wednesday, December 17. The Senior Group also has special events planned for the end of 2014. Registration for this event is open at Ferndale’s Community Center as well as Oak Park’s Community Center. The Emory and Kulick Community Center have partnered to add a free meal offer. “If you register through Ferndale and you have your receipt, you can actually go to The Emory, and your daughter will get to eat for free. If you’re looking to rent one of Ferndale’s fourteen parks in 2015, Distelrath advises that City Parks usually rent on a first-come, first-serve basis and don’t usually require a permit. City Parks can be reserved May through October and are open from 7 A.M. to 10 P.M. Whether you’re looking for a big park to host a family reunion or something small and intimate, there’s a park to suite the party’s needs.
