With the opening of the new, post-flood, Ferndale Library in 2010 came the Science Fiction (SF) Book Club.

It was mostly founded by Friends of the Library member and Ferndale resident, Kevin Deegan-Krause, who took an early leadership role in this eclectic group. Now, the membership roster boasts about 25 members, though turns out a core of five-six members regularly, with occasional drop-ins from the school superintendent or a city council member.

Kevin, who teaches political science at Wayne State, said that “Fern- dale, a city full of people who have this hybrid of technical expertise as well as the arts,” was primed for a science fiction book club.

This genre “forces you to think big, explore individual agency and provocative questions and possibilities.” Kevin is especially keen on science fiction that presents alternate histories or that offers us a way to “reflect on our differences; the alien as a metaphor for the Other.” In this genre, one might begin thinking about what a different society might offer humanity, because, Kevin continued, “in order to get to a plausible future, you have to understand how the present works.”

“How much does history have to change to get something very different?” This is a central question in the type of science fiction that bends history, and one that stirs the members of the SF book club. But sometimes “the book is just a speck of our interactions,” said Carol Paster, retired teacher and arts afficionado. Carol fell in love with science fiction as a child of seven or eight years, watching Captain Video & the Video Rangers. “I discovered Lee Marvin when he played an alien.” Of the members, she offered, “we all like science fiction because it presents possibilities… of society but also of styles (in literature).” In response to an oft-touted critique, she quickly rebutted, “so much of science fiction is a reflection of reality, a study of human potential rather than escapist” and something to the effect that, “CSI-type mysteries are escapist.” For Carol, the group exists to have fun with literature, and “we come together to share our different perspectives.” Though well-read (an English Literature major), she’s delighted to have “gained new appreciation for authors and books through this group, and through our conversations.”

Like the literary salons of centuries past, this group is interested in the big questions. As Carol wryly stated, “Why would we need a club to discuss Patterson?” It’s also a relaxing and open space, akin to the living room book clubs and coffee houses of recent times that allow drop-ins and drifts in emphasis.

The Science Fiction Book Club is about creating a public space, a forum, where unlikely friendships are built and a variety of perspectives are brought to bear on what’s possible.

Kevin surmised, that “anytime you engage with the written word with other people, you enrich your understanding… and [it] expands our worlds a little bit.” Their discussions evolve from thought experiments and explorations of alternate histories: what would the world be like without gender; what if Roosevelt was killed and the Nazis won WWII?

Books are selected annually in March, but newbies will have opportunities to weigh in on this year’s selection. Members also have the option to taste a book, if schedules prevent digesting an entire novel; shorter pieces usually accompany each full-length book. Prize winning novels, short stories, and authors usually make the list, along with a mix of the old or classics and new (written after 2000). Over the last four years they’ve read Diamond Age, The Island of Dr. Moreau, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, Beggers in Spain, and The Big Time, among many others.

Not surprisingly, the Science Fiction Book Club wants you to check them out, or at least “think about the way in which this seemingly escapist genre is also about our deeper urges and desires and what we can be capable of as human beings.” If you’re already into Science Fiction literature, you will be at home among a distinguished set who view “this [genre] as a form of literature that is exceptionally powerful because it’s one of the only kinds that asks the big social questions, as opposed to the big personal questions.”

While chatting with Carol, and flitting between decades of memories, films, history, books, and abridged experiences, it struck me how susceptible the mind is to growth or to spanning random/subconscious information; how on the edge it can be positioned for creativity, given the right stimulus. The Science Fiction Book Club is most definitely one kind of such stimuli….

Professor Cooper’s Wonder Clean is less than a year old and already growing tremendously. Making appearances in retail stores and selling online, the Wonder Clean line has grown to include surface cleaners, as well as body-care items and nearly everything in between.

Owner Chuck Cooper is dedicated to creating powerful products without resorting to harmful chemicals; an all-natural product at an affordable price. Although the company just launched in April of 2012, Chuck has been testing recipes and ingredients for two years. By following customer responses and growing the business in unexpected directions, Professor Cooper’s Wonder Clean is only the beginning of a wondrous journey.

The idea of Professor Cooper’s Wonder Clean was born when Cooper was 12 years old.

Digging through his parent’s attic on a quest to learn about family history, Chuck found a diary belonging to a great uncle who lived nearly a century ago. The uncle was a scientist with an obsession for cleaning that
made him sound like he was losing his sanity. His recipes for cleaning solutions were made of all natural ingredients, and the trial and errors he documented inspired the young Chuck.

Although Chuck has dabbled with a few different career opportunities, he has found his natural cleaning products to be a fulfilling trade for a number of reasons. “I have always had an entrepreneurial mind,” he explains. “Meeting new people at trade shows and seeing what they can do has been the inspiration to try new recipes and products.”

Chuck found it motivating to replace unpronounceable chemicals with minerals from the earth and oils from plants. Using all-natural ingredients frees the home from the potentially dangerous chemicals that most cleaners use as main ingredients.

Unlike many organic cleaners, though, Professor Cooper’s cleaners are both effective and affordable.

The cleaners are easily integrated into daily cleaning routines. Professor Coopers offers an all-purpose cleaner that can be used on floors, walls, and in the kitchen and bathroom. The surface cleaner is perfect for counters and tables. The dish soap, hand soaps, and laundry detergent come in a variety of scents that are long-lasting.

Each of the cleaners comes in large portions that are affordable on any budget. In addition to the natural ingredients, Professor Cooper’s is dedicated to using recycled and repurposed materials for packaging and shipping. Post-consumer waste is used for the bottles and labels.

From the outside in, every step of the Professor Cooper’s manufacturing process is dedicated to environmental responsibility.

Professor Cooper’s has also branched out into body care. The beeswax lotion is the perfect moisturizer through these harsh winter months. An immediate best seller, the lotions have been met with many rave reviews and continue to be a fan favorite. The bar soaps have four unique scents and exfoliating ingredients for a deep clean. Natural lip balms are also available at unbeatable prices.

The variety of diverse flavors that Professor Cooper offers is ever growing as new scents are introduced seasonally. The Detroit inspired Ginger Ale scent is amongst the most popular, mixing nostalgia and hometown love for Michiganders everywhere. The Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey scent is a relaxing and comforting blend perfect for lotions and lip balms. The cleaners come in fruity scents including Pomegranate and Southern Peach. Those who prefer savory have Sage and Lemongrass, Lavender, and Vanilla Oak amongst their choices.

Besides the safe ingredients, the recycled materials and unique products, one of the benefits of buying Professor Coopers is supporting a small, locally owned company.

“An enormous portion of cleaning and skin care products out there are made by only three huge corporations,” Chuck explains. “Detroit and Ferndale have a great history of supporting small business. Why not keep your money in your neighborhood rather than give it to a corporation where you’ll never see it again?”

Each step of making Professor Cooper’s products happens in Ferndale. The line is sold online and in retail stores in 15 different states.

Professor Coopers has made appearances at the DIY Festival and the Rust Belt market. Professor Coopers strives to be a part of the Ferndale community and have a personal con- nection with the customers through reviews and suggestions. Buy online at ProfessorCoopers.com and look for the brown bottles and barrel labels in retail stores near you.

In 2008, 63% of Michigan voters approved the use of medical marijuana. However, medical marijuana is not legal under federal law, and is causing some confusion in Michigan courts.

“You still cannot sell marijuana,” said Attorney Shawn Coppins of Coppins Law Group. “Still you cannot have a hand-to-hand transaction, money in exchange for marijuana, and people don’t realize that. Now, you can compensate your care provider for their time if they’re providing you marijuana, but to pay for marijuana with cash is still illegal.

So, it’s a very fine line of distinction that we’re dealing with.”

The medical marijuana possession limit for Michigan is 2.5 ounces or 12 plants. Coppins questions how the legal system constitutes a plant or how it will measure 2.5 ounces of usage. “These small sprouts and seedling plants, do they constitute a plant?” Coppins asked. “And the 2.5 ounces, how do we quantify that? What if they use marijuana to create a preparation like marijuana brownies? Then, do we figure out how much marijuana was in there or do we weigh the entire pan of brownies that has been made?”

Michigan isn’t the only state without an official and approved plan to measure the amount of marijuana in someone’s system. Coppins said the law hasn’t caught up with medical marijuana and, as of now, there’s no community standard in the law regulating its use. “Judges are handling things differently as well, because some judges will allow you to use medical marijuana while on you’re on probation to the court while other judges have said, “No, we’re not going to allow that because it still violates federal law,” Coppins said. “So until that is appealed and goes up through the process, up to our Supreme Court, and we have a firm decision on it, there will be a difference of opinion among the various courts.”

Legislation written for medical marijuana applies to state laws, not federal, and legislation has yet to outline the terms of medical marijuana usage with regards to driver license restoration, circuit and district court issues, and workplace employment. Terence Brown, co-owner of Onsite Substance Abuse Testing and New Frontier Counseling Services with Jacob Fakhoury, stressed the importance of medical marijuana cardholders knowing and understanding their rights.

“Understand what you’re getting into; that there are consequences and repercussions for you trying to get this medical marijuana card. So we’re not saying this is bad or not, just know what you’re getting into,” Brown said.

Coppins also cautions medical marijuana cardholders to ask questions and educate themselves on the laws of medical marijuana. “For instance, I don’t think a lot people, when they get their marijuana card, consider the possibility that smoking marijuana and driving would result in a drugged driving conviction,” Coppins said.

According to the Department of State, police officers can legally pull drivers over for Operating While Visibly Impaired (OWVI); meaning your ability to operate a vehicle has been impaired because of alcohol or other drugs. “That’s a completely subjective standard on the part of the officer,” Coppins explained.

Amy Hostinsky, a lead clinician for Onsite, warns clients not to think of the medical marijuana card as a Get-Out-Of-Jail card.

“Ultimately, a lot of times, the clients that I see will have been in trouble because they got a possession charge because they did not have their medical marijuana card,” Hostinsky said.

Because the legislation for medical marijuana is constantly evolving, Hostinsky said, it’s harder to get a medical marijuana license. “So a lot of people are more willing to take the risk of just getting it illegally than having to go to the doctor, having to pay the fines, and the fees,” Hostinsky said.

As the Michigan Medical Marihuana Program continues to develop the law, Coppins urges cardholders to stay current with its changes to avoid violations for its usage. “When this law came out, it seemed to be very easy to get a medical marijuana card,” Coppins said. “And now they’re requiring a bona fide patient-physician relationship and that’s one of the things that stands out in the revised DMA (Medical Marihuana Act), is that physician-patient relationship and defining what it is.”

Onsite Substance Abuse Testing and New Frontier Counseling Services have been providing lab confirmation drug test services, drug and alcohol testing (urine, hair, and saliva,), DNA testing, and counseling services for almost 10 years. Program specialities including drivers license restoration evaluations, employee assistance programs, anger management, domestic violence, counseling services, and more.

Onsite has offices is Ferndale, Warren, New Hudson, Ypsilanti, and Redford. An average of 5,000 patients are seen yearly by Onsite’s certified licensed counselors and social workers. For more information call the Ferndale office at (248) 399-8032.

A recent article in the Detroit Free Press named one of Ferndale’s own as Restaurant of the Year. Torino, a small restaurant located on the corner of 9 mile and Bermuda Street nestled underneath the Lofts on 9, is unobtrusive and sleekly modern.

Its special air of low-key sophistication is just one part of a dining experience unlike any other that the Detroit area has to offer. Open Tuesday through Saturday, the only ordering decision that patrons have to make is whether they would like a wine pairing with their meal.

The Free Press article has garnered welcome attention to the modestly-sized restaurant. “We’re very pleased, it was a lot of hard work to get through the past year. We’re very happy to get some recognition,” said Ian Redmond, beverage director for Torino. “It’s a lot of fun to watch people change their preconceptions about this type of dining.” He went on to say that: “We planned it as a slow build from last May until this Fall, so it’s all working out. We were pretty busy before, but this will put us over the edge into being consistently busy.”

Torino’s steady climb to success has been fueled by the rapport of the people involved. Incredibly enough, this high-achieving team was created mostly through serendipitous introductions, compatible personalities, and people evincing a desire to improve.

“I knew no one here,” admits Garrett Lipar, the chef behind the picturesque and delectable dishes. He was introduced to the owner, Noah Dorfman, through a friend of the family. The same fortunate happenstance occurred for Redmond, who answered an ad almost a year ago. When asked about his kitchen staff, Lipar said, “They had the passion to better themselves but didn’t have the direction to do so, which was a great equation for me. I built them up the right way. We took things very slowly from February to May; it took a while to get things going and really hone in on what we do.”

Everyone fell into place, creating a harmonious work environment. “We’re here together every day, watching each other learn and evolve,” Lipar says. He adds, “I just empower them. I give them the tools to do their job, and educate them the right way. Everyone here has their own identity but very similar styles.”

Each course that Torino offers is a unique blend of obvious culinary skill and subtlety. The menu is transient, changing each week, and is composed of an “amuse,” five courses, and an after dinner coffee. The “amuse” is a single-bite delight that introduces and showcases the chef’s approach to the evening’s cuisine. The tasting menu is usually posted in advance on the website, allowing patrons to have an idea of the key flavor notes in each dish.

When asked about the changing menu and drink list, Redmond stated, “It keeps us on our toes, it keeps us learning new things.”

The inspiration for these dishes is credited largely to the products themselves. “We let them dictate how the menu unfolds. Their shapes, their lines, their contours, their smell, their taste, their sugar content…” It’s obvious that Lipar, a man with vegetable tattoos gracing his forearm, could wax poetic on the natural beauty of the foods he works with. He has final say of everything that comes out of the kitchen, but admits that, “Sometimes it’s more me, sometimes it’s more my team. There is the vision I have for things, and then other people taking that idea and running with it. We get together and brainstorm.” An important element of the success of the restaurant seems to be teamwork. “I surround myself with good people. Whether they are knowledgeable about this or not, they are good people, and they have a passion for life,” Lipar said.

Years spent working in some of the best restaurants that New York and Chicago had to offer helped Lipar to build his style along the way. “I learned balance in New York, and being more adventurous while in Chicago.” He then decided to travel abroad and work in a Stockholm restaurant called Frantzen which he credits with helping his style mature. “It was a place that had a tasting menu format, similar to what we do here, and it really opened my eyes to doing things differently.

There’s no gimmickry involved; it’s just a beautiful product, very cleanly presented, no extra sauces,” he explained, his passion evident in his voice.

When asked about the challenges of introducing a new style of dining to the Detroit area, Redmond answered that it was convincing people that they are going to like new things. This covers not only the food, but also the wines. “People drink what they drink, and they eat what they eat, without realizing that when it’s matched it’s a whole other level. I like being able to turn someone on to something new,” says Redmond, who is in charge of picking out and buying all of the wines, beers, coffee, and tea at Torino. He writes the lists, inventories, and creates the wine pairings, although the bartenders help craft the cocktails lists.

Space within the restaurant is a commodity. The kitchen is little more than a narrow corridor, where the chef, the sous chef,

line cook, pastry chef, and dishwasher engage in an intricate dance each evening. The seating area is only 9 tables and a bar that can fit a dozen patrons. Due to limited seating capabilities, anyone interesting in sampling their untold delights for the palate would be wise to make a reservation. Additionally, since the kitchen is so small and all of the ingredients are ordered fresh, it is possible that there may only been enough food to serve guests that are expected.

Allergies and dietary restrictions have to be noted in advance so that the kitchen staff has time to buy special ingredients for an alternate version of the menu. Near the door, beside their smiling hostesses, is a purveyors list that informs guests of where the high quality ingredients are gathered from. “I have access to a select group of products that other people don’t even get to see. We have some of the best from the best purveyors, farmers, and foragers in the nation,” Lipar asserts.

The best part, according to Lipar, is “I get to live my dream. All I want to do is cook. I’m happy to be here with the people that I have. I’m lucky.” When asked if he had anything further to say, Lipar responded, “No, I’ll just let the food speak for itself.”

Residents were concerned about costs and safety, and worries about the multiple complaints the city manager received can still be found online. It was not well-known at first that a grant paid the costs of the lanes, or that major intersections, where cars turning right usually cross the bike lanes (and seem dangerous) are actually safer than the bike lane being on the far right. I can remember waiting with Phil on our bikes in these spots, feeling exposed and vulnerable to cars on either side, and occasionally fielding a complaint about our presence there or questions from drivers about how safe we felt. Now, these spots feel normal. (That intersection plan, by the way, is called The Portland Model, after our nation’s most famous bike-friendly city, and was devised there to prevent the accident-prone situation of bikes heading straight in front of cars that are turning left.)

Our bike lanes have become a normal way of life; in fact, most cities in Michigan are now bike-ordinary if not actually bike-friendly.

We saw a number of cyclists in Port Huron recently, braving cold and plenty of snow. We see in Ferndale not only the lanes, but silhouettes painted on the Nine Mile surface, reminding us that bikes are both
legal and expected. There are bike racks everywhere, a bike shop right downtown, and plenty of bike-friendly gifts like the “Pump Tires Not Gas” T-shirts in Naka, near the Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop. Bike store owner Jon Hughes told us that the lanes and bike racks scattered around the city make cycling a no-brainer. “It’s so much easier to bike here and find a rack. It’s easier than dealing with parking,” Hughes said. As Ferndale’s popularity and nightlife have grown, parking has become an issue, and free parking beats being stuck in a lot jammed with people cruising for a spot.

The Green Cruise, held every Saturday a week before the Dream Cruise, makes Ferndale one of Michigan’s prominent bike-event cities. This year’s Green Cruise will be held on August 9, and will feature three different rides as well as the famous parade down Nine. You can ride a hardcore 42 miles, a moderate 22, or a family-friendly four. Search the words “Green Cruise” for the official website, and the inspiring story of last year’s Green Cruiser of the Year.

Michigan is about to change the bike hand signal for the right turn; a bill is on the Governor’s desk as I write this. The new law allows cyclists to simply extend their right arm to signal a right turn, rather than signal with a bent left arm. The current method became law shortly after WWII, so this revision is overdue. Though this seems like common sense, probably many of us who use a straight right arm pointing to the right will be surprised to know we were breaking the law (especially those of us who hassled our husband into doing likewise).

So ride our bike lanes, use our racks, enjoy our nightlife parking-hassle free, and put the Green Cruise on your calendar.

Rebecca Hammond owns a silly number of bikes and is a former Green Cruiser of the Year, as is her son Chris (with his more normal number).

From running for mayor to dressing up and giving historical tours of the downtown area, Wells is dedicated to being a part of the Ferndale community. Her resume includes experience as an educator, a practicing lawyer, a published author, and the list keeps on growing.

Although she was not elected mayor during her 2013 run, she is staying true to the goals she held while campaigning. “You don’t have to win elections to keep your campaign promises,” she explains. Her vision of a transparent government, an actively participating community, and a city that is equal parts night-life and day-life is becoming a reality in Ferndale.

While running for mayor, one of the biggest areas of interest for Wells were the committees and boards Ferndale offers to the residents — something she’d been passionate about for some time. Wells was also elected with the most votes to serve on the Charter Revision Commission, which worked to help reorganize and rebuild Ferndale’s boards and commissions. Since then, Wells has been actively working to connect residents with boards that can fit with their talents and interests, regardless of age or experience.

One of her biggest joys in meeting people is helping them find ways to help serve the city. She encourages neighbors of all ages to find an area in which they can pursue their passions, become part of the community, and help Ferndale grow.

Wells has a B.A. in education from Michigan State University as well as a law degree, and believes in educating the public on the rule of law. Her philosophy is “an ounce of education is better than a pound of court.” Along with an educated public, Wells pushes for a transparent government, one that can explain itself with every action it takes, one that does not operate behind a curtain. She believes that if the government exists to serve the public, then the public should know about every step they take.

Wells is of the opinion that with an educated population and a participative government, there is more ability for growth and a closer government.

In addition to meeting neighbors and improving the city, Sherry has found another great reason to volunteer and participate. “When you move to Ferndale, you never have to buy another t-shirt,” she jokes. From volunteering with different organizations and helping with the numerous events Ferndale hosts every year, Wells has earned well over a dozen shirts that serve as another example of her hard work for the city. The Ferndale Library’s Board of Directors, the Ferndale Historical Society, the Downtown Development Authority, and the Rotary Club are just some of the groups that have seen Wells’ name on their volunteer roster.

With the mayoral election now comfortably in the past, Wells is turning her attention toward the future. In addition to self-employment and her volunteering regimen, Sherry Wells is dedicated to making her city more environmentally friendly. She is currently working on city-wide recycling programs and hopes to enact a Community Building plan to educate citizens about growing gardens to trade goods with their neighbors. She is also working to plan the third installment of an event she created called Family Fundale. A day-long celebration for families from all over Metro-Detroit, Family Fundale 2014 is scheduled to take place on May 3rd.

A love for her city and a dedication to service drive Sherry Wells. She is part of the great fabric that makes the Ferndale community so unique. If a city is only as strong as its citizens, Ferndale has a bright future indeed.

You don’t need introductions, though, do you? Everyone knows Jeannie. From her running of political campaigns alone, she’s a local Hall-of-Famer. If something is going on within the city, you can bet Jeannie is involved. “Like everyone else, I love love-love going places and everyone knowing me. There are so many people I know, and I have so much fun,” Davis commented. Her unique connection to others starts with Jeannie’s rare ability to look beyond surfaces when dealing with others — a quality she and Brennan shared. “Virginia could always make you see the good in something or someone. With her, you were doing dental floss through your brain.”

Born in Grosse Pointe Park, Jeannie was raised by her grandmother as one of seven children. “You don’t need a man to get along; you need a man to get the lid off pickles and fix flat tires,” her grandmother told her. After attending convent school in Monroe, Jeannie moved to Ferndale in the mid-‘60s where she raised three children — all graduates of Ferndale High School who are still nearby.

“I’d like to think [my grandmother would] be proud,” Jeannie said.

Jeannie worked as a home appraiser for years, running her own business with, at one point, a 60-hour work-week and over a dozen employees. Many of her appraisals were in Detroit, and it didn’t take long for her to make her mark in that community. One instance that stands out was the case of one house that had an alligator caged in the basement, unbeknownst to Jeannie, who became famous for adding “remove alligator from basement” to her list of miscellaneous recommendations. “I was known all over in the appraisal world after that,” she said.

Other highlights of Jeannie’s past? She was once an astrologer who practiced the art at parties and even on
the radio. Her epiphany when charting our stars and planets? “Everything does not revolve around the earth.” Eventually she was invited on the evening news and “was debunked.” Being Jeannie, she remembers even being debunked as fun, “especially hair and makeup.”

Jeannie’s part of the newly-revived Arts Commission (and wonders what you’d like to see such a commission do in Ferndale; an orchestra, maybe?).

“I do decorative painting, and I teach that [at the Kulick Center]. I knit. I love gardening. I used to do vegetables but it’s easier to go to Western. My yard is huge and ideal for fundraisers [like Ferndale Democrats]. I’ve tried to figure how many thousands we’ve raised in my backyard.” How did she end up running so many local political campaigns? “I have no idea,” she quipped. Despite that, she managed or worked on campaigns for Craig Covey, Greg Pawlica, Dan Martin, Rob Porter, Dave Coulter, as well as various human rights causes.

“Jeannie is an amazing, giving woman who cares deeply about her community, all the while sharing a boisterous and bawdy sense of humor,” former Mayor Craig Covey said. “We are lucky to have her. She has been a huge ally and confidant.”

Councilman Greg Pawlica shared a similar sentiment: “Jeannie is an incredibly dynamic lady who I admire greatly. She has more energy and drive than some people half her age. I am honored to be able to call her a dear friend.”

Jeannie may be most active with the Seniors group. She’s been president now for seven years. “They needed to be more visible. I did everything I could to make them more visible. Pub Crawl, Blues Fest, Music in the Park; now we have representatives of some group who’s doing an event contact us and ask, ‘can we depend on your cooperation?’ The volunteers do a couple of hours and get to enjoy the event,” Davis said.

But no matter what group or organization she’s working for, Jeannie brings with her a dedication and love that is unmatched in Ferndale and beyond. “I love the seniors, I love the Ferndale Foundation. I’m on the board of that as well.”

A good sense of humor and a passion for her community; Jeannie Davis represents the best of what Ferndale has to offer.

Dan Martin said this: “Jeannie Davis is a bit of an icon in Ferndale. She really embodies how people of all ages and stages of life can contribute and weave the fabric of our culture here. Over time she has been involved in so many things, influenced and supported so many people. As her understanding of the community has evolved she has personally evolved too and just keeps getting better and better. She has made a tremendous impact to the community, and luckily for her, no one is pressing charges.”

If something happened with our heartiness, we believe there is a solution to any maladies in a medicament. What medicines do patients purchase online? Viagra which is used to treat impotency and other states coupled to erectile dysfunction. Learn more about “sildenafil“. What men talk about “viagra stories“? The most essential aspect you have to look for is “sildenafil citrate“. Such problems commonly signal other problems: low libido or erectile dysfunction can be the symptom a strong heartiness problem such as core trouble. Causes of sexual malfunction include injury to the penis. Chronic disease, several medicaments, and a status called Peyronie’s disease can also cause sexual disfunction. Even though this physic is not for use in women, it is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk.

Probably no one will ever really be able to answer that question. Car cruises take place all over the nation, and surely the Motor City, but there is only one Woodward Dream Cruise. If a staunch environmentalist like myself loves and looks forward to it every year, it’s special. (It’s also a good demonstration of the power of regulations. You can sit in traffic on Woodward in most rush hours and not notice fumes; the Dream Cruise makes you feel like a heavy smoker after an hour or so.)

This year’s Cruise takes place officially on August 16th (see the Dream Cruise web site for a countdown clock; as I write this, the Cruise is 143 days, 18 hours, 24 minutes, and 19 seconds away), but of course, the unofficial Cruise begins over a week earlier. Remember the days of cruising on Friday night to avoid traffic jams? Now you’d better move that back a week or more.

Ferndale’s Cruise events span August 14th, 15th, and 16th. Check out ferndaledreamcruise.com for the specifics, which include, as usual, rock and roll bands, Mustang Alley, retro emergency vehicles, and a real milestone: the Ford Mustang’s 50th anniversary.

When else do you see traffic on Woodward part like the Red Sea to let an elderly couple cross? Or unfailingly polite and considerate driving up and down the Avenue? It never fails that a local paper will interview someone from afar, visiting Detroit for the first time just because of cars, and coming away with a completely positive impression of the Motor City.

This is our moment in the international spotlight. Enjoy the Cruise!

Are you ready for your chance to play a super- hero in real life? Want to make the world around you a better place? Then grab your friends and sign up to participate in Ferndale’s Relay for Life at Ferndale High School June 14th and 15th.

Returning to Ferndale for the seventh consecutive year, Ferndale’s Relay for Life is a 24-hour event which brings together people from all over the Ferndale area and beyond to help raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer — one of the most affecting diseases throughout the world.

Though specific details of the Relay are still yet to be announced, participants can look forward to an incredible day of entertainment and emotion. The event begins on June 14th with the Opening Ceremony which serves as the perfect high-energy start to the awesome weekend-long event.

The first lap of the Relay is the Survivors Lap, where cancer survivors are invited to take a celebratory lap around the track in honor of their victory over cancer.

The emotional center of the event comes that evening with the Luminaria Ceremony — an extremely moving portion of the Relay where small luminaria bags containing candles are placed around the track at dusk illuminating the area in memory of those who are still fighting their battle with cancer or who’ve sadly passed away from the horrible disease. The event con- cludes with a Fight Back and Closing Ceremony both dedicated to highlighting and celebrating the commitment all participants and volunteers have made to work to fight back against cancer during the coming year.

This year’s Relay for Life promises to be a “super” event, with a superhero theme taking over the entire weekend.

Volunteers and participants are encouraged to dress up and identify with their favorite superheroes to help create a fun atmosphere. Whether you’re a spectator, Relay participant, or you make a pledge to help support the effort, the weekend event promises lots of laughs, plenty of contests, great entertainment, and memories that will last a lifetime – all for a great cause.

The Hilton Fall Festival, named for its former location along Hilton Road, will return to Martin Road Park in Ferndale on Saturday, October 11th from 11 am to 5 pm.

Once again presented by Garden Fresh Gourmet and spearheaded by Ferndale Recreation, the festival brings a full day of fun with amazing activities throughout the day.

Carnival games, concession sales, pony rides, hay rides, pumpkin painting, face painting, crafts, a costume contest, trick-or-treating and more are offered for one low price per person.

The festival was moved from Hilton Road to Martin Road Park in 2013 because Martin Road Park offers a perfect autumn backdrop with its beautiful trees. In addition, the large Activity Center located there provides plenty of indoor space to host most of the games and crafts so that potential rainy weather doesn’t hamper the event.

Tickets to the event will remain affordable at $5 per child ages three through 15, $2 per adult, and free for children two and under. Parents will enjoy an all inclu- sive price structure because it allows their child to participate in all the activities.

Ferndale Recreation is able to offer this all- inclusive price structure because of the generosity of many local businesses.

Major sponsors in the past have included: Garden Fresh Gourmet, Hodges Subaru, Gage Products Company, Oakland County Parks, Grand Central Self Storage, DTE Energy, Credit Union ONE and Ferndale Public Schools. In addition, nearly 100 supporters volunteer throughout the day to ensure families have a great time.

Many details are still in the works. You can learn more and get updates by visiting www.hiltonfallfest.com.

If you are interested in sponsoring one of the many fun activities or in volunteering, please contact Jill Manchik at Ferndale Recreation at 248-544-6767.
