THE MORE SUCCESSFULLY A city mingles everyday diversity of uses and users in its everyday streets, the more successfully, casually (and economically) its people thereby enliven and support well-located parks that can thus give back grace and delight to their neighborhoods instead of vacuity.” – Jane Jacobs, The Life and Death of American Cities.

Hazel Park is changing – and fast. The revitalization and development of a thriving downtown is on the horizon and moving forward each passing week.

An institution called The Congress for New Urbanism – which aims to develop “vibrant and walkable cities, towns, and neighborhoods where people have diverse choices for how they live, work, shop, and get around” – selected Hazel Park and one other Michigan City to assist with the urban development process for local citizens wanting more out of their town. Beth Holland, Charles Gladue, Mike Webb and Jen Jackson – all Hazel Park residents and volunteers – are working for and with the Hazel Park government and CNU to help improve Main Street Hazel Park.

For starters, John R. Road – owned by Hazel Park, not Oakland County -will be refurbished and improved. The current road is two lanes, which will be reduced to one – the other becoming parking spaces – while the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph, allowing safety for bikers without the need for a bike path. From 8 Mile to 10 Mile, the city will be divided into districts -restaurant/retail, an art area, an art park, a historical museum (the original Hazel Park Library), a farmer’s market, and more.

“I lived in Ferndale from 1960-1970, before Ferndale even had a downtown. It was during this time period when Ferndale first began to debate with Oakland County over the usage of 9 Mile Rd. as a place for a Main St. Here in Hazel Park, we don’t have that issue – the city of Hazel Park itself owns John R.,” said Beth. This fact will contribute to the ease and speed that the downtown can be created now that the wheels are in motion.

A vitamin store, a recording studio, an Italian Bakery, unique eateries and other businesses will be popping up all around the 2.8 square mile city. Philanthropists such as the Truba family, residents of Hazel Park for 40 years, have donated funds for an outdoor fitness center at Greenacres Park. “The equipment that will be installed in the park will be specially made for outdoor fitness,” Councilman and local mechanic Mike Webb said. The folks from Detroit TV Series, Hardcore Pawn, will open a shop in Hazel Park (although not shoot episodes there). Most interestingly, inside of the original Hazel Park Firehouse (next to Checkers on 9 Mile) will be a firehouse-themed restaurant called Fire House Plaza. “I’m not sure our city will house as many bars as Ferndale, but we’ll have plenty of restaurants and retail, plus a farmer’s market open on Sundays starting June 19 of this year,” Beth said.

Heading up the creation of the Farmer’s Market is Jen Jackson, a native of Holland, MI who harnesses a passion for her new city, as well as helping those in need. “All monies generated from leasing Farmer’s Market space will be reinvested back into the market or into Parks & Recreation,” she said.

The vision for the New Hazel Park is “practical, not crazy” – and the other amenities and spaces included at the Farmer’s Market will offer just that – affordable, fresh produce and goods, a playgroundfor children, bathrooms, a near-by dog park and plenty of parking. Some of the vendors already showing interest in occupying the market space are Jentzens Farms out of Monroe, Apothecary Handmade Cosmetics, Ain’t No Sunshine Farm, and Pink Robin Bakery – which already has three locations in Detroit. The Farmer’s Market will be located on the Ferndale border off Woodward Heights, exactly where the Hazel Park Art Fair is located every year. SNAP and EBT Cards will be accepted at the market.

The energy and excitement exuded by these four Hazel Park citizens was incredibly inspirational. To better serve their community, each of them have dedicated their own time and energy to educating themselves – through MSU Extension programs and an Oakland County crash course called “One-Stop Ready” – in efforts to provide them with the knowledge that will help aid them towards achieving their goals. The knowledge ff-hp-group-bwHPGMMarket@gmail.comgleaned from these programs have led to quick and easy processes which facilitate businesses getting permits and approvals much faster. Companies that apply for business permits in Hazel Park typically receive them one-two weeks after the application date. Further, they have assisted in changing zoning laws to allow for businesses to purchase and knock down unoccupied (for a minimum of six months) adjacent houses, to create parking space.

The most amazing detail regarding the sudden development of The New Hazel Park is that it’s coming on the heels of very, very difficult times for the city. “From 2008-2012, the city was in an utter state of emergency. With the financial crisis, and State funding being cut, we asked citizens to step up, and they responded”, said Councilman Webb. “Now, we’ve got triggers in place to continue developing the city under financial stability for the next 25 years. As the road bonds and ice rink are paid off in the near future, this will free up capital to continue to put towards further growth and progress. Not only is Hazel Park an affordable place to retire, but it will very soon also be a viable place for millenials to get started. The schools are improving, their financial health is returning under our new superintendent, and the new downtown will be a place to shop, socialize and enjoy.”

If your dreams are in the clouds and you prefer a little dedication to instant gratification, model airplanes are the hobby for you. Ferndale is in the lucky position of being home to one of the oldest model airplane clubs in the country, and currently one of the largest clubs that fly free-flight, control line and remote control models. Whether you’re a seasoned builder or a newcomer, the Cloudbusters are a necessary destination.

The Cloudbusters have been growing in members and knowledge for 77 years. The group started in 1939 as a handful of teenagers who enjoyed building planes and flying together. Originally called the Thermites Club, they met at different hobby shops and churches around Royal Oak and Southfield. Although participation dropped rapidly during World War II due to the draft, the group carried through the war and gained momentum in post war America. In 1944 the group changed their name to the Cloudbusters, which has stuck to this day.

In 1965 the Cloudbusters became incorporated under Michigan law, with their own bylaws and Constitution. In 1983 the club gained charter status with the Academy of Model Aviation (AMA) as Charter number 1911. Throughout their history they have competed in national competitions as well as local. The Cloudbusters also put on their own events and competition annually to showcase what years of practice and dedication can build. Yearly group auctions allow for members and newbies to trade parts and rare models.

Although there are remote control and control line enthusiasts in the group, the majority of the members prefer the original free-flight concept. The planes can weigh less than a penny and are propelled by rubber-band motors. Because the free-flight planes have no steering capabilities, a chase vehicle (normally a golf cart or a motorcycle) must be ready to follow. Despite not being able to steer the planes, they are designed for stabilized flight, rotating in slow and steady circles across the sky. Seeing people lay on the ground under planes is not an uncommon sight, as the hypnotizing flight path draws audiences. Free-flight planes compete mostly on flight time, with members of the Cloudbuster’s boasting over 20 minute flights on some of their planes.

Throughout the summer the Cloudbusters arrange for outdoor flying events. Whether it is casual club meet ups or group contests, any fair weather, low-wind day is fair game for model flights. The club sponsors the annual FAC Outdoor Championship at the National Flying Site in Muncie, Indiana. The Cloudbuster’s annual club picnic in August is open to friends, families, and locals, and includes prizes for the contest winners and lunch for the spectators and contestants.

To protect against unpredictable weather conditions, the group also arranges for indoor flights weekly during the winter months. They sponsor the annual Indoor Fling, one of the largest indoor contests in the USA. The Indoor Fling is held at the Ultimate Soccer Arena for a more controlled environment.

The Cloudbuster’s also hold monthly meetings throughout the winter months. The meetings serve as a place for exchanging tips and product recommendations. Each meeting includes members presenting their prized models as well, from planes made of dowel rods and tissue paper, to larger fiberglass planes. The meetings are the perfect starting spot for people new to the hobby, where the seasoned pilots are happy to share their knowledge and stories. The jovial conversation that carries the meetings is welcoming for even the clueless (author included).

The passion that the club members share for model planes goes beyond inclusive events. Cloudbusters are available to put on educational events and have hosted scout groups as well as Science Olympiads. In the age of drones and pre-built remote control planes, the Cloud-busters are more than happy to accommodate young Busters-to-be. A little dedication takes model planes a long way, and the Cloudbusters want nothing more than the tradition carried on.

Watch the Cloudbuster’s website for upcoming events, at http://cloudbustermac.tripod.com. The website is also a great resource for information on and photos of the different models. The monthly newspaper is also a great place to find plane design plans as well as recaps of past events. There are summer flights and fun flies planned, and monthly meetings resume in September, the third Tuesday of each month at the Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Album Release Party July 2 @ Loving Touch

Ask Ryan Cox if he’s in a band, and he won’t know how to answer you. While his answer won’t be “…no,” he’s still not quite sure what, exactly, you might call The Good Things.

Now, while we’re here to tell you about the release party for the Good Things’ new album, Bedroom Sessions, (hosted at The Loving Touch on July 2), we should probably elaborate more on Cox and the methods to his creative madness. The Clawson-based song tactician tries to solve the equation of human emotion with carefully constructed bursts of melodious pop-rock, rollicking with exuberant pianos, resonant with warm harmonies and percolated by peculiar percussive arrangements.

As an artist, he’s interested in irony: he scoops out the murky melodrama, bitter pills, and worn-down wills of the broken-hearted and brightens it all up with a bit of buoyancy and brio. As a musician, well, he doesn’t consider himself one. As a songwriter, he’s more of a storyteller. Cox has an associate’s degree in both liberal arts and cinematic arts and a bachelor’s in English with a minor in film studies. He’s got his eye on being a professor, someday, and currently balances time between being a dad, a musician, and a teacher.

Cox has been playing music for almost half of his 29-year-life. He started playing in bands in his late teens and formed The Good Things around 2007, with his writing partner John Morales and other collaborators. They recorded an E.P. and went on a handful of tours, flirting with regional fame and stoking some local buzz. Until…until the Good Things, which was always built around Cox’s songwriting, frayed apart and wound down to a one-man operation, in early 2010. In July of 2012, four years ago almost to the day, Cox coordinated a small orchestra of talented players to interpret a full set of songs to perform live at the Loving Touch under The Good Things moniker. After that, the Good Things seemed to disappear…

I still remember that show with fondness and a twinge of the bittersweet. The Good Things numbered about 10 players that night, each performing an eclectic array of instruments, with Cox not really at the center or in the spotlight, but elusively bobbing along around the edges with the rest of the waving energies from these palpably excited humans. It was full of life and curtained by quirks; the kind of good time pop that gets you lowering your guard and inching closer to the stage. It manifested movement, encouraged undulation and fastened fun melodies into your ear. You wanted to be in this band, after seeing them. More than that, you felt like you could be in this band…that there might not be any reason that you couldn’t come on board…

And then the set ended and I told Cox about how inspiring it all was and he said, ‘Great, I’m glad you enjoyed it, I think this is the last Good Things show ever…!’

That was four years ago. Now, Cox and I convene for coffee and ruminating/wandering conversations at least once a month and he’s remained resilient to refuse resurrecting “the band” in a traditional performing state.

THAT SAID: He continued writing and recording music over these last four years, ceaselessly…and secretly. He told few others about it, but he never stopped The Good Things as a songwriting and production entity. He not only finished this new album (mostly by himself, in bedrooms), but has also begun work on another E.P. and even two more concept albums to follow after that…

Bedroom Sessions isn’t a debut, but it will still feel like an introduction. “The new beginning,” says Cox. “The sequel is the prequel…”If we’re introducing you, then you have to know just how intense he can be about making music, not just in analyzing equalization levels of certain frequencies or in scrutinizing the meter of lyrics, but also in a more capricious sense of exploration, or experimentation. Cox wants to find new sounds. Much like Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys) before him, he’s hearing fantastic pitches and strange timbres in his head that he’ll work meticulously toward capturing, mic-ing up outrageous riggings of everyday household materials and turning them into drums, or noisemakers of some fresh variety.

That’s why he calls it “garbage-pop…”

“Everything makes noise,” said Cox. “You can figure out how to make something good out of it if you experiment with it long enough. And I’m patient….sometimes. But I’m still keeping the songs sounding familiar.” (You’ll notice influences like The Beatles, or Black Keys, maybe the Rolling Stones or newer groups like The Generationals and The High Strung.) “But ‘garbage’ is the perfect metaphor! Open a garbage can and it’s this chaotic, collage-y mess of things! But also, some cool stuff is in there and sometimes it still works! Also, it keeps a degree of humility in there…”

“These (songs) are supposed to be representations of me…But they’re very cryptic, and play with fantasy and alternate history. I can’t make them sound perfect because I’m far from that capacity, in terms of audio engineering. But, if they’re representations of me, they should reflect the flaws, the benefits, the interesting things, the intriguing things; they should all be there, in their own modes, whether it’s my performance on the guitar, or me forming a kick drum sound out of nine different things. It’s like…I’m always in rough-draft mode! Then I get to the end and ask: What if I changed THIS? And what if I changed that!??”

And that’s the main reason it’s taken Cox four years to put out this record; every other month or so, he’s changed something. Or worse, he’s changed lots of things. But it’s all Good Things. I can’t even get into how elaborate and fantastically scoped his next three albums will be; I’d much rather you start that conversation with Cox in person, at the Loving Touch on July 2nd, when eight new performers will be backing him up and interpreting the Good Things’ new songs.

And even as you read this, he’s probably in his makeshift studio, neurotically doubting his decision to finally come back. But it’s gonna be good! Whether he believes it or not; it’s gonna be good!

Just as the grass turns lush and the spring buds finally bloom, one of Ferndale’s favorite candle, lotion, and everything else shops is growing right in season. Green Daffodil is celebrating its tenth birthday, and expanding their store as the perfect present to all.

Most famous for their handmade, vegan, 100 percent non-GMO soy candles, Green Daffodil has grown over the years to include other homemade products, gifts and affordable vintage finds. Owners and best friends Anne Simonette and Siouxsan Miller say they are happy to fill the void of the gift shop niche in Ferndale.

“There is such limited retail here and we like being known as Ferndale’s gift shop because we carry a whole assortment of things from greeting cards, kitchenware, and pottery from a local artist, to jewelry and then we have obviously all our handmade stuff,” Miller says.

Located at 624 Livernois Ave. Green Daffodil will host their grand reopening on Saturday, June 25th from 11am until 5pm. The location was originally dedicated mostly to production of the bath and body line for their wholesale business, which sells to over 100 stores across the country. They purchased the empty space behind their shop and spent the winter expanding, instead of hibernating like the rest of us. This expansion provides a stronger retail presence and storefront.

“It’s just allowing us to be a little bit more efficient with our production because our wholesale is forever growing,” Miller says. “We were at a point where we couldn’t mentally or physically grow our business in the ff-jj-gd-insidespace that we were in; we will just be able to work better and smarter.” The new storefront is inviting and relaxed with cool, vibrant green walls and thoughtful product arrangements that open into the studio where visitors can get a peek at how their favorite products are created.

“We display it in a way that is very fun and friendly and the products we’re bringing in are thoughtful and different, maybe not something everyone else is carrying and that is a huge task,” Miller says. “It’s something that’s important to us.”

The most important aspect of their business, though, is that the product is quality and cost efficient.

“A lot of times companies are really over the top with packaging but then the product is mediocre. We are all about the product being what soy is supposed to be — long burning, smells amazing and good for you,” Miller says. “We try to do limited packaging; we want the actual product to speak for itself, not the bells and whistles.”

“We call it an affordable, everyday luxury; so people can actually burn the candle instead of buying a $35 candle and thinking ‘When are we gonna burn it,’ you can buy our large tin for $12.50 and you can burn it for a long time and enjoy it,” Simonette adds.

The grand reopening will allow visitors to get the full retail experience of Green Daffodil and a chance to buy and smell all their products with daily sales, food, refreshments and some of the store’s outside vendors on site to discuss their own products.

“The city is doing a ribbon-cutting because we never had that and we are kind of branding it as a grand reopening to get the public to really know that we are for sure a retail store,” Miller says. “It’s not a whisper, we are shouting it out!”

Green Daffodil is located at 624 Livernois, Ferndale MI 48220, 248-547-4172

Jay Ray’s will be serving ribs, pulled pork, mac and cheese, a loaded sweet potato (which he says was a huge hit last year), and he’s messing around with a “few cool ideas,” too. Joining Jay Ray’s for the second year at Pig & Whiskey are Zeke’s Rock ‘n’ Roll BBQ, Rub BBQ Pub, Old Carolina Barbecue Company, Woodpile BBQ Shack, Smoke Ring, Rubbed, and the Mac Shack.
Here’s a full list of vendors: Smoke Ring, Jay Ray’s BBQ, Detroit BBQ, Hog Wild, Stonewood Smokehouse, Crooked River, Old Carolina Barbecue Company, Taste ‘n’ Tell, Red Wood Grill, Zeke’s Rock ‘n’ Roll BBQ, Shredderz food truck, Union Joints, Rubbed, Rub BBQ Pub, Alley Taco, Smoke Shack, Woodpile BBQ Shack, and the Mac Shack. There will be plenty to drink, with six kinds of beer and more than 30 whiskeys available. You’ll be able to buy tickets for food and drinks when you arrive. Make sure to bring your appetite!

THE MUSIC
No summer festival would be complete without a packed lineup of bands. You’ll be able to catch the performances on a stage set up on East Troy Street. This year’s set features something for everyone, with a wide variety of musical styles. Friday’s lineup kicks off with Goober & The Peas, followed by Stone Clover, Holy White Hounds, and Le Voyage. Saturday will be a packed set, featuring eight bands: Electric Six, The Handgrenades, Earth Engine, Ohtis, Honebabe, The Blueflowers, American Mars, and Billy Brandt. Mustard Plug, Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers, the Beggars, Tart, Jill Jack, Mega Wedge: A Ween Tribute Band, and Kevin Thibodeau & the Cast Iron Horns will close out the show on Sunday.

*** The weather will be hot, the food will be good, and the music (and drinks) will keep you dancing. For a look at all the fun from last year’s festival, check out this album on Facebook. Mark your calendars, and for updates or more information, visit pigandwhiskeyferndale.com. Pig & Whiskey is from 6 p.m. to midnight on Friday, July 15 , 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, July 16, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday, July 17; on East Troy Street in Ferndale; admission is free, but tickets must be purchased for drinks and food; all ages welcome.

Every December, Royal Oak is flooded with Santas, Mrs. Claus, elves, and many more holiday-costumed individuals. While this may not seem out of place on December 25, you’ll witness this weeks before Christmas. The reason for the early holiday spirit? SantaCon, a holiday- themed pub crawl sponsored by Ultimate Fun Productions and The Social Connection.

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 5.54.12 PMIf you’ve attended an event or bar crawl in metro Detroit, chances are high that it was produced or sponsored by either The Social Connection or Ultimate Fun Productions. These Ferndale-based groups host everything from tailgate parties, galas, monthly dinners and bar crawls.

Ultimate Fun Productions, run by Matt Flynn, holds most of its events in Royal Oak, Ferndale and Detroit. The Social Connection, founded and run by Regina Stocco, also produces social events and festivals within the same area. Ticket sales and event proceeds from both groups benefit a variety of charities, including AIDS Walk Detroit, Help Cerebral Palsy Kids Corp, Royal Oak Historical Society and Healthy Detroit. Most events through Social Connection and Ultimate Fun Productions have tickets available from $10 to $65 and offer discounted tickets for purchasing early.

On December 12, these groups offer two opportunities to show holiday spirit. Starting with the Santa Hat Hustle at 8:30 A.M. Racers have the choice of a 10K, 5K run/walk or a one-mile Santa Stroll. Prices range from $10 to $55. Participants are encouraged to bring at least one unwrapped toy for a drive benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oakland and Macomb counties.

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 5.54.16 PMFollowing the race at 1:00 P.M., runners can join the festivities of Santa Con. Tickets cost $15 and include specials on holiday spirits and drinks at eleven of Royal Oak’s best bars, including BlackFinn, Gusoline Alley, Hamlin Corner and Ale Mary’s. A portion of ticket sales will also go toward the Boys and Girls Clubs. Costumes are not required (but are encouraged) and attendees can enter to win Uber gift cards, as well as tickets to the Resolution Ball and Motor City Gala, two New Year’s Eve events also sponsored by Ultimate Fun Productions and Social Connection.

The Motor City Gala takes place in the 11,000 square foot main ballroom at the Atheneum Hotel. This formal event hosts a VIP dinner with live jazz, performances by two comedians, followed by some of Detroit’s most popular DJs to bring in the New Year. The other event, Motor City New Year’s Eve THE DROP is a free event that draws 20,000+ at Campus Martius and Cadillac Square in the heart of Downtown Detroit.

Meanwhile, The Social Connection will be hosting the 12th Annual Resolution Ball at the Fillmore Detroit for New Years Eve. This ticket is one of the hottest in town, as the event sells out every year before Christmas. Offering discounted hotel rooms and free shuttles to and from the event, you can do downtown Detroit in style on New Year’s Eve courtesy of The Social Connection.

Both Social Connection and Ultimate Fun Productions host an event at least once per month, with varying themes and locations, making it easy to find something to please everyone. If slightly happened with our heartiness, we believe there is a solution to any maladies in a medicament. What medicines do patients purchase online? The most substantial aspect you must look for is “sildenafil citrate“. Such problems commonly signal other problems: low libido or erectile dysfunction can be the symptom a strong heartiness problem such as soul trouble. Causes of sexual disfunction include injury to the penis. Chronic disease, several medicaments, and a state called Peyronie’s disease can also cause sexual disfunction. Screen Shot 2015-10-20 at 1.50.49 PMA COMMUNITY CAN ONLY GROW AND FLOURISH if residents are willing and enthusiastic about its success. Ferndale has no shortage of dedicated individuals contributing their talents and time to building a caring, tight-knit neighborhood, but sometimes matching those skills with organizations in need can be a challenge.
In an effort to bring those willing to help together with the nonprofits making a difference, the Ferndale Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) combined efforts to connect the two for a night.

On Tuesday, September 22, eleven nonprofits from the Ferndale area gathered at Blumz by JR Designs, located at 503 East 9 Mile Road, for a Volunteer Open House. About 50 people attended.

“Knowing that Ferndale is a very giving community, and many people have been inquiring on social media about volunteer opportunities, we thought it would be a good time to offer residents the opportunity to easily meet with a variety of organizations to find out where they fit,” Cindy Willcock, Interim Executive Director of the DDA, says of the event.

Screen Shot 2015-10-20 at 1.50.42 PMThe hardest part of building a volunteer relationship might be deciding what cause is right for you. For two hours, attendees had the chance to learn about the various groups making a difference in metro Detroit and how they could get involved.

Some of the participating organizations include Camp Casey, a 501C3 nonprofit horseback riding program for kids with cancer and their families, and Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County, where residents help build homes for their neighbors.

Modeled after a similar DDA event held in 2010, Willcock and Ferndale Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ashleigh Laabs decided to host the open house after the DDA and Chamber began collaborating on multiple events this year.

“We realized that we both sometimes struggle with not having enough volunteers to help us achieve our goals,” Willcock adds.Organizations chosen for the open house were a combination of those from the 2010 event and prominent organizations in the Ferndale community. Willcock says they strived to represent a diversity of nonprofits and cover a range of needs.

The DDA is actually one of the groups constantly in need of volunteers. According to their website, volunteers worked over 5000 hours in 2014 helping with events, engaging in committees and serving on their boards.

“I don’t think that many people realize that the Ferndale DDA is a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization that is overseen by staff,” Willcock says. “We couldn’t accomplish everything we do; events, programming, advocacy, promotion, business assistance, etc. without our outstanding group of volunteers.”

For those that missed the event this year, you can see the full list of participating nonprofits below and should expect this event to return next year, if not sooner.

“I think we’d definitely like to do it on a yearly basis, although based on the feedback from groups that want to participate, we might consider doing something more often,” Willcock anticipates.

Whether you attend the open house or not, volunteers are essential to a community and volunteering means much more than the efforts you put in. It builds community, creates new relationships and can make a lasting impression on those in need.

“One of my favorite quotes about volunteers is, ‘Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless’,” Willcock says.
