WE FERNDALE STREETWALKERS MAY TIRE of right angles and flatness, but we never tire of the variety of homes.

Ferndale’s abundance of architecture may not be unique nationwide. Most of us have friends who live in neighborhoods that look like ours. But we’re by no means the norm in the metro area. Our creative abundance hits home for me when new music students from, say, parts of Madison Heights or Sterling Heights drive less than a mile on my street, and their first words are, “The houses here are all different!” A real estate agent from Grosse Pointe, showing the house across the street, called these neighborhoods a treasure, and said, “I had no idea this was over here.” Local realtor and long-time Ferndale resident Keith Weber (who has known many Ferndale houses longer than their owners have) told me, “You can take a walk through Ferndale and walk through the evolution of the average American home. It’s like walking through a history book of early middle-class American houses.”

Your neighborhood walk will inundate you with variety, but if you focus on each house as an individual, Tudors will remind you of England, cobble houses of Rochester, New York (the cobble-house capital of the nation.) You will see houses that seem lifted from the French countryside. We have craftsman homes of multiple designs and configurations; American, Mediterranean, and Dutch colonials, we have foursquares, farmhouses, 20s bungalows near post-WW II bungalows that seem like architectural sleight-of-hand, so roomy inside you can feel you walked into a house of mirrors. We have cottages framed by evergreens that look plucked from Up North, a handful of midcentury modern and ‘60s homes, and our city also inspires the biggest compliment builders can give an old community: New construction that blends in so well, the homes could have been built during our 1920s housing boom.

ff11611If you Google that boom, you may end up with the impression that Florida had the only one, or the main one, but postwar America in general had a housing boom, Ferndale included. Keith said that this was the beginning of Americans owning architecture, as opposed to basic farmhouses, something Ferndale, of course, already had. A proliferation of style began, with new and creative financing options spurring the growth. No, the boom didn’t last, and the 1930s saw many mortgages go under, but it created the Ferndale we mostly still see today.

Add in some societal changes, factor in longstanding Michigan industries and you have our city. Homeowners of the ‘20s wanted style, they wanted architecture, and they wanted comfort. Keith quoted Kenneth Galbraith to me, from the book The Affluent Society, about America’s “conviction that God intended the American middle classes to be rich.” The new homes often had fireplaces, sleeping porches, breakfast nooks, built-ins, oak floors: details added for comfort or a touch of luxury rather than strictly for practicality. Roomy enough for families, the homes were small enough for another societal change: lack of servants. This new wave of architecture had that shift in mind. Servants had been common enough that even books like Little Women or the novels of Jane Austin, with running themes of poverty, included them as standard characters. Now America had planned, developed neighborhoods, with yards to tend as pastimes as opposed to farms to work for sustenance, with houses small enough for a housewife to handle on her own.

Most of us know of a local Sears kit home or two, but homes ordered from catalogs became a common option, and Michigan’s Bay City, Keith says, was a hub, home to several companies. Sears, Aladdin, Lewis Homes, Liberty Homes, and Sterling Homes all were centered there, some remaining until the 1950s. Michigan’s lumber industry made the port of Bay City a logical center of the kithome industry. The Ferndale Historical Museum has preserved some of those catalogs. Keith pointed out some historical subdevelopments in Ferndale, like our upper-East- Side’s post-WW II bungalows (abundant throughout the city), and some working-class housing near 8 Mile, those homes having been built closer together than elsewhere in town. There are also some bigger and more elaborate custom homes on our northern edge.

I asked Ferndale residents on Facebook to sum up what they like about their house in a word or two, and was expecting words like “cozy” and “character.” I was more surprised at “sturdy” (maybe long-time owners of old homes end up taking that for granted) and “solid and safe.” People have repeatedly told us our own house feels good, and my own descriptive word for it is “comforting.” Maybe people who buy into places like Ferndale want a house that seems to put its arms around us as opposed to a house that makes a statement to others. But I like hearing that people think their home is quirky, or has energy, or nooks, or is a dollhouse, or that the yard is the best part, or that the house has history.

You can look up your house’s history at the Ferndale Historical Society at 1651 Livernois, near the fire department. Susan Humphreys found that her home was once owned by a doctor who treated patients in that home, Colleen Kmiecik that her home once had a bomb shelter. Mine was once owned by the owner of an oil company (a bit of odd karma for an environmentalist.) A cut-stone home in NW Ferndale was supposedly a wedding gift, with two heart-shaped stones placed in the front facade. Some of our houses have architectural mysteries, some being cleared up when work is done. An older plumber pointed out that our house had been built with no plumbing, explaining (after two decades of us wondering) why we have a huge bath upstairs, dwarfing the smallest bedroom. When plumbing was added, the room over the kitchen had to be the bath, and it didn’t matter that it was a big room. That plumber arrived after two younger ones took a look at our ancient toilet, old enough to be bolted to the wall, and said it couldn’t be repaired. The older gentlemen, of Nelson Brothers, took his own look and said, “Of course we can fix it,” then told us that houses built in the 20s in Ferndale and Royal Oak were often still built with no plumbing, including his own mother’s house. We had already taken half the commode to a plumbing-supply house in Oak Park, where another older gentleman glanced at it and said, “Let me guess. Detroit, or Ferndale?” He himself once lived on an 18- acre farm in south Ferndale and rode his horse to school.

ff11612We’ve found parts of rolls of fence wire in our back yard when digging a fish pond, along with many pottery shards. The Vandermarks, right behind us, once dug up a toy roadster, looking as intact as when it was lost, maybe in the ‘30s. Our certificate of occupancy says 1930, but the Ferndale Historical society says it was built in 1937 AND that the first owner of our house bought it in 1924. Ductwork cleaners say the ducts are from the teens. Webber told us years ago that our downstairs layout became unpopular after the 1920s, with a large foyer that would have a been a guest parlor, a living room small by 1930s standards, and the dining room the biggest room downstairs. One previous owner removed our leaded-glass built-ins, having gone on a ‘70s spree of “updating.” Several passersby have told us of seeing our house on fire in the early ‘40s, and when our plumbing was replaced 10 years or so ago, the plumber found burned areas along his route. By the way, those witnesses of our fire, the aftermath of which is still obvious in the basement, watched the lady of the house throw her most precious possessions out an upstairs window: first her dog, then an armload of nylon stockings, all of which blew into a big and long-gone tree. Nylon stockings were hard to come by in WWII. I hope she salvaged some of them.

“Ferndale is blessed. Original development took place when architecture became available to the average person,” Weber told me. We’re still blessed now. Variety is the spice of life. Enjoy ours.

Q: WHEN IS IT A FELONY TO DRIVE without a license? I thought it was a minor traffic offense.

A: Usually driving without a license is a minor legal issue, but there are significant exceptions. There are three kinds of charges that could bring you to court. You can get a “civil infraction” a “misdemeanor” or a “felony.” Usually a “civil” matter can be filed by private citizens but in driving cases a police officer can bring a civil action.

A civil infraction is not a crime. If you are charged with a civil infraction, you do not have a right to an appointed lawyer or to a jury trial. On the other hand, you cannot be sentenced to jail and you don’t even have to go to court.

With a civil infraction, you can hire a lawyer to appear on your behalf, plead “responsible” and pay any fines. Of course, if you demand a formal hearing, you have to be there. General- ly, a series of expensive fines and fees are added and you may get “points” on your driver’s license, but you do not get a criminal record. Failure to stop at a stop sign or failure to use a turn signal are examples of civil infractions. A civil infraction is probable cause for a stop.

A misdemeanor is a “minor crime.” It is minor only in the sense that the maximum jail term is 93 days plus a fine of $500. A record of misdemeanor violations is still a criminal record and it will harm job prospects and can have other lifelong consequences. A more serious crime is a “felony” for which a person can be sentenced to prison. Driving without a license is i usually charged as a misdemeanor. A charge of suspended license can go to prison for up to five years “failure to display” a license implies that the driver was licensed but failed to show a valid license when required. This charge has no points and is not reported to the Secretary of State. Driving without a valid license because you never obtained one, or were denied, or suspended, is a more serious charge than simply not having your license to show, and it does include points as well as potential jail time.

Truly serious felony charges can arise if a person’s license is suspended or revoked and they continue to drive.

A person who gets into an accident that causes a death while they are driving with a suspended license can be sent to prison for up to 15 years, as well as being assessed a $10,000 fine. A person who causes a “serious impairment of a body function” (defined as injuries like fractures, loss of use of limbs or organs, and other injuries) while driving with a suspended license can go to prison for up to five years and pay fines of up to $5000.

Drivers should not be lulled into thinking that driving with a suspended or revoked license is a minor legal matter. Although usually a good driver who made a mistake can escape jail time and other punishment, a suspended driver who persists in driving puts themselves in a position of major risk.

JUST SAY “CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS” and we all either cringe, or get all giddy at the thought of all the shiny baubles that appear every year at this time. Nothing in between.

I have always fallen into the second cate- gory. I annually made pilgrimages to Bronner’s, enthusiastically worshipping at the altar of excess, happily planning themed trees and festive wreaths. Now, at 75 years old….not so much. Yet, like almost everyone else, I have a basement full of old decorations, gathering dust.

Oh, I know, each bauble triggers a memory and makes us smile. But like many people my age, I don’t want to bother to drag the boxes up, fight with the lights, pouf the bows, and find all the missing hangers.

In recent years, I had found a solution by enlisting the aid of my kids, Timmy and Lori. I cooked for them and they decorated for me. It was always a wonderful evening, Lori always does the den so she can watch her favorite movie, “Young Frankenstein,” as she works, and Timmy creates something new every year. Then, the event grew. First, Greg Pawlica dropped over after dinner to offer advice. Dan Martin came for dinner, and stayed to watch the movie. Lori’s friend Jeanne soon joined in. We have created great memories on these evenings.

However, it is time to thin the herd. I have too many decorations, yet, hate the thought of discarding them. Virginia commented on what fun it would be if we all brought out Christmas stuff together, and exchanged. This would be so inspiring to see other people’s baubles. It would all look new to us.

Or, we could find a group that would take them for people who can’t afford unnecessary things like Christmas decorations. That way, these things would be creating new memories. These families all get food, warm clothing, and a few toys during the holidays, all delivery by caring groups, either the Elks, or the police, or one of the many churches in town. But, I never hear of Christmas trees given out, let alone the decorations. This could be so easy. Maybe Jim Pool, who has done so many other heart-warming things, could do this. If anybody wants to take this on, private message me, and I will be happy to work with you.

In the meantime folks, sort through your stuff, and box it up. I will buy new lights. This is sort of a no brainer. Merry Christmas!

MICHIGAN HIKING TRAILS HAVE great displays of fungi in Autumn, with specimens here in Ferndale as well. Look up the USDA’s website on Michigan fungi. No matter how geeky this sounds, the names alone make it worthwhile: Hen of the Woods, False Tinder Conk, Swamp Death Angel, and one seen here in Ferndale, Dryad’s Saddle – one specimen can produce 100 billion spores.

One of the best parts of living in Michigan is constantly discovering things to do along roadsides. Some become favorites. It’simpossibletoignoretheviewfromtheCutRiver Bridge on US 2 in the UP, but I wonder how many people know it’s also a great stop. The east side has one of Michigan’s ubiquitous long wooden stairways; down, down, down to river and lake level. The views of the bridge, the rapids, and the lake change with each step. You can head up a path on the west side, and can return to your car across the bridge. Stone stairs on the bridge itself take you underneath to cross to the opposite walkway. Opened in 1947, the bridge is 641 feet long and 148 feet high. We’ve enjoyed a good leg stretch there for years.

And there’s Bruno’s Run. A 9.25-mile loop trail buried in the Land O’ Lakes that is the central UP, it’s a true slice of Michigan, wandering through a varied forest and along numerous small lakes and a river. If you like feeling far from people, find Bruno’s Run. It’s south of Munising on H-13. There’s trailhead parking along Moccasin Lake.

What seems to be a mere rest area along M-28 west of Munising on Au Train Bay is really a treat, with Scott Falls across the highway, and Lake Superior steps away. The lake is often a rolling and thunderous place here if the wind is from the north, pushing waves across 150 miles of open lake before they pound the shore at your feet. A small pictures rock rises to the right, not too visible from the highway. In October the beach was dotted with almost perfect sphere of grass, some eight inches across and weighing a pound (yes, I took one home), formed by the pounding of the grass-filled surf against a small sand bluff.

Considering that one milkweed pod can hold 300 seeds, the fact that the Ferndale Monarch project has given away almost 250 pods could mean as many as 75,000 seeds distributed. A green gift idea for a butterfly lover would be some packs of seeds, milkweed and maybe coneflower and d goldenrod, along with a book about butterflies, or a shirt or poster. Try Monarch Watch’s gift page for some lovely choices. They also certify as “monarch waystations” places that have a required number of monarch-friendly features. That could be a great gift (you can order a sign) for those who have already planted butterfly gardens. Check out Library or King Books for butterfly or guide books. Visit The Doll Hospital and Toy Soldier Shop in Berkeley for the mesh cages designed for raising caterpillars.

You may have noticed new LED streetlights along Detroit freeways. They use far less electricity than the orange-ish sodium vapor lights that often preceded them. The Detroit Free h Press and Forbes Magazine have had articles listing the advantages of LEDs, and one is enhanced night-sky viewing, even in urban areas. Forbes showed before- and-after pictures of LA, and the difference is striking. Glare is reduced and the new lights have better coverings, directing light downwards. The artificial orange haze that crowned LA and our city, visible from miles away, seems all but gone. Detroiters report feeling safer. Stars blaze on a darker, bluer background. The morning sky lately has been stunning, with a crescent moon rising, Venus blazing in the east, and Jupiter and Mars nearby. Orion is often due south when I arise, morning west through the early morning hours.

Michigan has three “dark-sky” preserves. House Bill 5023, sponsored by Peter Pettalia, seems to have cleared committee as of this writing. It would “designate the state-owned land encompassing Rockport State Recreation Area, Negwegon State Park, and Thompson’s Harbor State Park as dark sky preserves.” Michigan was, in 1993, the first state to set aside a dark-sky preserveL Lake Hudson in Lenawee County. Most of us who travel north come home with a common rhetorical theme: the stars.

The 60-year old Enbridge Oil Pipeline that crosses the Straits of Mackinac is still under scrutiny, a rupture there having the potential to cause an economic and environmental catastrophe. Representative Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor has introduced bills to gain more state oversight on pipelines, with more inspections, access to reports and plans, and higher standards for permits. This seems reasonable for a state with 3,200 miles of shoreline alone for Great Lakes. So far these and other bills have not made it past the early phases.

RYAN DILLAHA & THE MIRACLE MEN – MIRACLES IN MONO

This poetic singer/songwriter demonstrated his knack for classic honky-tonk, but he couldn’t shake his lingering lean towards a more rock ‘n’ roll swagger. With a tremendous team of players like The Miracle Men having congealed a brotherly chemistry with the Ferndale based Dillaha, they were able to transmit the rock energy of their live shows onto a record that is as pastoral as a heartfelt folk anthology and yet also wears its blue collar scuff marks with quiet pride, as though emitted from a beer-splashed jukebox. ryandillaha.com

DESTROY THIS PLACE – ANIMAL RITES

Because this quartet doesn’t take anything for granted; that’s what makes them dangerous. Local music fans have been seeing these four players in other bands over the last eight or nine years so you already know they’ve got the pop/rock goods; but that doesn’t mean any of them approach DTP’s blitzing songs and live shows with any sense of local super- group entitlement. In fact, Animal Rites shines because of how much attention and meticulous care each player contributed to the overall composition. It may be the loudest, hardest and fastest they’ve ever played in their lives, but their savvy sutures a new kind of grace onto that grit. destroythisplaceband.com

OLD EMPIRE – HOW TO MAKE AN ENTRANCE

Old Empire perfected the popera, or mini pop opera, with their latest batch of rockers. The local quartet go back to the riffy qualities and driving backbeats of seminal indie-rock and imbue it with a sweeter layer of harmonization between its male/female co-leads, laying out rich narratives resonating with eerily relatable sentiments and wisdom-ringing gut punch encounters from a weekender’s life “on the scene.” Old Empire makes the pop jams for the converted cool, the reformed scenesters who’ve attained a more worldly sensibility. Fun, freewheeling stompers that also make you stop and think. oldempire.bandcamp.com

PROTOMARTYR – THE AGENT INTELLECT

This Detroit quartet became the darlings of several tastemaking blogs and hipster music zines across the country with their last record’s exceptional blend of post-punk

caustics, no-wave defiance and art-pop dynamism. Their latest demonstrates a sensibility for effective minimalism; the right tone of guitar over the sparsest clasp of drums and bass with that gravel-ly lead vocal, settin g moods of ponderous dread and cathartic cool. protomartyr.bandcamp.com/releases

VSTRS – VSTRS

VSTRS (as in, Visitors…as in, from an alien world…) are a mixed bag of music, from post-punk to new wave, to alt-rock revivalism and anywhere in between. Spacemen 3 or Mercury Rev or Siamese Dream-era Smashing Pumpkins might be good reference points, but that would also leave out some of their other inclinations towards a bit of krautrock and spacey psychedelia. visitorsarehere.bandcamp.com

ANCIENT LANGUAGE – FOLK SONGS

Initially the instrumental compositions of electronic music producer Christopher Jarvis, his brother Zachariah joined a year ago to add funky flourishes of live bass. Fans of seminal trip-hop, ambient electronica and evocative dream-pop should tune in. ancientlanguage.bandcamp.com

800BELOVED – SOME KIND OF DISTORTION

The psychedelic, shoegaze-informed, pop-ensconced noise rock of visionary songwriter / producer Sean Lynch, this trio put out their most invigorating and provocative album to date. Listen now! Their facebook page has hinted at an inevitable self-imposed demise. 800beloved.bandcamp.com

FLINT EASTWOOD – SMALL VICTORIES

This Detroit-based project is powered by Jax Anderson, a force of nature when it comes to forging endearing and relatable lyrics onto irresistible arrangements of dance-pop synthesizers, cinematic sounding guitars, window-rattling bass and nimbly-footed percussive hooks. flinteastwoodmusic.bandcamp.com

THE WHISKEY CHARMERS – THE WHISKEY CHARMERS

I’m continually charmed by the Charmers, a local duo that mine the darker sides of folk, blues and country twang to unearth a literary-tinged mysticism crossed with a quasi campy, geek sophistication; imagine if murder ballads and

ghost stories had a lot of surf-rock reverb. I could imagine their music being on almost any Jim Jarmusch soundtrack. thewhiskeycharmers.bandcamp.com/releases

MEXICAN KNIVES – MEXICAN KNIVES

Dynamic, dark-sider surf punk, with a bit of SW country-rock valiance; sounding something like Quentin Tarantino’s alternate universe conception of CBGBs-era New York grime rock. mexicanknives.bandcamp.com

GEORGE MORRIS & THE GYPSY CHORUS – WE WILL GO TO HELL FOR THIS
A bit of throwback-ish minimalism, bringing an edgy indie- rock aesthetic to a piano and synth-centric pop balladry. There’s a universe of difference between 28 and 18, and Morris, who was initially whisked away to L.A. for his first breakout rock band, has such an endearingly wiser and relatable take on life, not to mention an uncanny sense for the most persistent earworm melodies. georgemorris.bandcamp.com

TUNDE OLANIRAN – TRANSGRESSOR

There are several adjectives I could employ to elucidate this remarkable lyricist, performer, choreographer, designer, and producer; words like awe-inspiring and show-stopper and pop-iconoclast. Electronic, hip-hop, soul, R&B, dance-pop… Everything at once. Tundeolaniran.com

Screen Shot 2015-12-13 at 12.20.18 PMWHAT ART HOME DESIGN, Hazel Park, presents can best be described in one word: unique! The enterprise’s promotional post card proclaims that “We work with granite, marble, quartz and limestone.” Have an interior design need? Art Home Design can help, from the kitchen to the bathroom, and any room in between.

“I’ve been serving this community from my present location on John R Road for over 17 years,” reports proprietor Alex Mohammadi. “I had another store in the area before this one.

“That adds up to 34 years in total that I’ve been addressing the needs of people around here. Almost all of my clientele is generated by word-of-mouth recommendations. I’m not a fan of massive conventional advertising.”

Screen Shot 2015-12-13 at 12.20.28 PMHe adds, “That’s the way it was when I worked for my father and later inherited the ownership of his shop in Teheran, Iran before I came to the United States in 1991.”

Mohammadi is one of only a handful of artisans outside of Iran and Iraq to have mastered the art of creating indoor and exterior-designed plaster molding with a knife.

His skill was nurtured by observing his father and the experts around his parent. Mohammadi also studied interior design in Germany.

Another uncommon component of the portfolio spotlighted by Art Home Design is the company’s specialty of putting customized plaster molding in place in home shower rooms. This embellishment is frequently seen in old residences in Europe.

Screen Shot 2015-12-13 at 12.20.35 PM“Aside from our passion for cutting plaster molding,” Mohammadi says, “we are known for our expertise with granite table tops. Our computerized machine finishing, not widely- used hand polishing, generates a great deal of attention for us. So does our ability to make customers happy with two to three-day turnaround versus what other operations in this field promise in two to three weeks! We show more than 800 colors from all over the world. I advise those seeking our help about how our work will fit in with their present decor. That’s a part of our free estimate process.

“I have a designer and carpenter on my staff. Our company favors the team approach to bringing professionalism into the decision making efforts of our customers. Art Home Design does residential and commercial refacing cabinet work, too.

“Providing good service that’s reasonably priced is our policy. We care for our customers from the time we first have contact and into the future,” Mohammadi concludes.

LaVida Massage of Ferndale has been undergoing some important changes, under the new co-ownership of Shawn McFaul and Michelle Towers. I met both owners recently at 23153 on Woodward Ave, just North of 9 Mile, and I was impressed with their entrepreneurial enthusiasm. McFaul and Towers described themselves as completely “hands-on”- type owners of the franchise location – putting in all the extra hours needed to create a solid business since April of this year. They also have a team of fully licensed massage therapists and aestheticians working hard to assist in the rejuvenation process.

The LaVida focus is on total wellness, with services ranging from various types of massage to professional skin care. Numerous studies have shown that massage can promote health in many ways; benefits include relaxation, increased flexibility and pain-management. Over 13 varieties of massage can be performed at LaVida, including those relating to: Couples; Sports/Deep Tissue; Prenatal; Swedish; Reflexology and Aromatherapy. Skin services include waxing and hair removal (plus the option of a high-tech Ultrasonic Dermasound treatment). Only professional product lines are used at LaVida: Green Massage and Dermalogica.

Reviews of the Ferndale LaVida Massage location have been very favorable and are growing steadily. This is partly because McFaul and Towers are experienced in providing high-level customer service; McFaul came from a background in business brokerage and landscaping, and Towers was a manager in home healthcare.
Rates are reasonable, with plenty of special offers to choose from. Currently, a new client can receive a one-hour custom massage for just $49.95, or a signature facial session for only $59.95. For frequent visits, a LaVida Massage membership can be purchased to give you consistently discounted rates, and members-only privileges (visit their website for details, listed below). An appointment is generally recommended by McFaul and Towers, and they offer on-line booking or call the store direct. Walk-ins are also accepted.

With regards to their new, joint endeavor, McFaul and Towers both agreed, “…we are making a mark…and we love it!”

For further information, contact Michelle Towers or Shawn McFaul at: 248.556.2005, or via email: Ferndale.mi@lavidamassage.com. Store hours are: M-Sat, 8.30am-9.00pm; Sun: 11am-6.30pm.

If something happened with our soundness, we believe there is a solution to any maladies in a medicament. What medicines do patients purchase online? Viagra which is used to treat impotence and other states coupled to erectile disfunction. Learn more about “sildenafil“. What humanity talk about “viagra stories“? The most substantial aspect you should look for is “sildenafil citrate“. Such problems commonly signal other problems: low libido or erectile malfunction can be the symptom a strong health problem such as soul trouble. FROM A HUMBLE BEGINNING IN HIS BERKLEY HOME to a small office in Madison Heights in 2006, then to a new larger headquarters in 2009 at 2222 Hilton in Ferndale, Pete Sanders, president of Fuse Technology Group, has worked hard to grow his successful Technical Services and Custom Software/Programming business.

Due to that strong growth, Fuse Technology Group is now expanding from 3,400 square feet to 6,200 square feet with the addition of an adjacent building at 2202 Hilton, formerly occupied by CWL Investments, owner of over 50 Jimmy John’s Sub Shops. With 20 full time employees, the company was up 20 % in 2014 over 2013 and is predicting a 30% increase in 2015. Fuse will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2016.

While Fuse provides a number of technology services, the company is comprised of two main components: Tech Service and Custom Software Development. The Tech Services division provides technical support services to over 250 businesses in Metro Detroit from fixing any sort of computer or server problem to implementing new technologies and cloud computing. The Custom Software division develops custom apps and software tailored for specific needs a business may have.

Sanders credits Fuse’s success to staying keenly focused on the latest cutting edge technologies and al- ways giving the best customer service possible. Those two things, combined with a very loyal client base and
an amazing team, have allowed the company to enjoy continuous growth.

“We are not just a break/fix computer company,” says Sanders. “Our techs have the necessary education and technical skills to make us much more. My motto since starting the company has always been ‘grow, change, or die’, which is why we are constantly evolving our technical skills and knowledge. We always try to see
around the corners to the next technology evolution and learn how it will impact our clients. We have had the privilege of employing some of the brightest technical minds in the area, and our strong work ethic and passion for technology has earned us a fiercely loyal client base.”

“I’ve had some people ask why we didn’t move to a bigger building in the tech area of Metro Detroit like Farmington or Novi, but the truth of the matter is, we simply love Ferndale. The city has been extremely easy to work with and we felt that remaining here was the logical choice for both our staff and our clients. Our proximity to the major freeways allows for faster response times and the tech-friendly business landscape facilitates collaboration with valuable industry partners. The building’s layout and size, as well as ample parking for both our staff and clients, made it an easy choice for expanding our operations here.”

“I’ve been fascinated with computers since I was 13 and was lucky enough to get my first computer job at the age of 17. By the time I turned 19 I had started my own company. After graduating from Oakland University I decided to start Fuse Technology Group. Given that the country was on the brink of a major recession, I couldn’t have picked a more challenging time to start a company. But I knew that our small team was amazing at what we did and if we kept the focus on customer service and giving people what they needed, we would succeed.”
