A legendary local Ferndale dive bar, The New Way was purchased by current owner ç in 2013. D’Angelo was seeking to keep the neighborhood feel but improve the service-level and atmosphere while supporting the live music scene. “I was always interested in the bar business, and I thought I could own one and make it successful. I like knowing people’s names, providing something for the community, while trying to leave my mark. Dive bars are seen as comfortable, homey, welcoming and familiar—yet, can be kind of…grimy and poorly run”, he says. “My vision for The New Way Bar was to keep all of the positive aspects of the dive bar, yet get rid of the negative ones.” And he’s done just that. Well-run, clean, with consistently new entertainment genres and performers, and excellent service from the staff, it’s become a staple on the pub circuit in Ferndale.

The initial improvements made were a new sign, putting a patio out front for spring/summer, painting the inside, new chairs and tables, and adding six taps of draft beer. The bartenders are all incredibly friendly, talkative, responsive and welcoming. The prices are fair, the food menu is simple but satisfactory—chili and homemade soups are available during lunch. The bar area, consistently filled by wisecracking regulars, offers two televisions to watch sports (and debate them) with a big screen in the back room by the stage as well. The atmosphere breeds openness, the customers tend to be outgoing and approachable, and acquaintances are easily made. A wall separates the bar area from the stage area, making the New Way unique in that it can be a sports pub and/or a music venue simultaneously. There’s also ski ball, ping pong, pool and table hockey.

As for live music, the venue does not take money out of the cover charge at the door—bands get 100 per cent. “I like all of the bands that we host, I want to treat them great. Music is such a big part of why I bought ff-jj-nwb-jdathis place”, D’Angelo said. Friday and Saturday nights are the most popular for live shows, each night boasting three or four bands. Cover is five bucks. Each band brings its own slew of friends, relatives and co-workers filling the joint with folks looking to turn loose. Each night brings a completely different mixture of people, providing an eclectic and novel crowd each and every weekend. On the first Friday of every month, the New Way showcases seasoned comedians Blain and Diego who utilize new material to host a cast of up to five comedians, and it is well worth the cover price.

Monday nights are Comedy Night, hosted by Amit Jain. There’s no cover, and the format is open mic. Comedians from all over Michigan, and even Toledo and Windsor, make the trip to the New Way to bounce potentially new material off the New Way customers to see their reactions and gauge the laugh meter. Consider yourself warned: No topic is off limits, and most comedians are “edgy.” If you’re easily offended, stay home.

Tuesday Nights are Jazz. There’s no cover, and there’s a rotating list of jazz bands who play from 8pm-9pm. Then, from 9pm-11pm people can come and sit in to play along with the band. “The Jazz community is close-knit, they all bring in their own “chart” of music.” Jamie said. If you want to play along with the other musicians, come prepared.

Wednesday Nights are open rock night hosted by Brian Miller. Brian has been hosting the event for three consecutive years and have won Best Open Mic in the Metro Times. “Mostly, we get a lot of singer/song writers, a lot of acoustic”, Jamie adds. How does someone interested in performing get on stage? “Come in or call, tell me you want to sign-up, and you’re in a slot. On average a musician has time for two-three songs, depending on how busy it is”, D’Angelo maintains. The stage is open from 9:30pm – 1am.

The New Way is unique in so many ways. Outside events are organized by regular customers from within—such as Sunday afternoon bike rides from The New Way to the Lions or Tigers game and back, tennis matches and euchre tournaments. Renting Rosie the Racehorse to pet and feed in the parking lot during the Kentucky Derby, offering “mystery shots” in brown bags at a discount, giving the most loyal customers cellphone access to change television channels to the game of choice reached by democratic decision, and bartenders that remember your name as well as your order—hosting up and coming local bands as well as jazz musicians, while providing proving grounds and a forum for offbeat and aspiring comics, some of them first-timers on stage—The New Way Bar is my favorite spot in Ferndale.

If you like to look cool and dress to impress when you’re out on the town—go somewhere trendier. If you want to let your hair down, strike up a conversation with some new people, and see live entertainment—the New Way is the place for you.

If your dreams are in the clouds and you prefer a little dedication to instant gratification, model airplanes are the hobby for you. Ferndale is in the lucky position of being home to one of the oldest model airplane clubs in the country, and currently one of the largest clubs that fly free-flight, control line and remote control models. Whether you’re a seasoned builder or a newcomer, the Cloudbusters are a necessary destination.

The Cloudbusters have been growing in members and knowledge for 77 years. The group started in 1939 as a handful of teenagers who enjoyed building planes and flying together. Originally called the Thermites Club, they met at different hobby shops and churches around Royal Oak and Southfield. Although participation dropped rapidly during World War II due to the draft, the group carried through the war and gained momentum in post war America. In 1944 the group changed their name to the Cloudbusters, which has stuck to this day.

In 1965 the Cloudbusters became incorporated under Michigan law, with their own bylaws and Constitution. In 1983 the club gained charter status with the Academy of Model Aviation (AMA) as Charter number 1911. Throughout their history they have competed in national competitions as well as local. The Cloudbusters also put on their own events and competition annually to showcase what years of practice and dedication can build. Yearly group auctions allow for members and newbies to trade parts and rare models.

Although there are remote control and control line enthusiasts in the group, the majority of the members prefer the original free-flight concept. The planes can weigh less than a penny and are propelled by rubber-band motors. Because the free-flight planes have no steering capabilities, a chase vehicle (normally a golf cart or a motorcycle) must be ready to follow. Despite not being able to steer the planes, they are designed for stabilized flight, rotating in slow and steady circles across the sky. Seeing people lay on the ground under planes is not an uncommon sight, as the hypnotizing flight path draws audiences. Free-flight planes compete mostly on flight time, with members of the Cloudbuster’s boasting over 20 minute flights on some of their planes.

Throughout the summer the Cloudbusters arrange for outdoor flying events. Whether it is casual club meet ups or group contests, any fair weather, low-wind day is fair game for model flights. The club sponsors the annual FAC Outdoor Championship at the National Flying Site in Muncie, Indiana. The Cloudbuster’s annual club picnic in August is open to friends, families, and locals, and includes prizes for the contest winners and lunch for the spectators and contestants.

To protect against unpredictable weather conditions, the group also arranges for indoor flights weekly during the winter months. They sponsor the annual Indoor Fling, one of the largest indoor contests in the USA. The Indoor Fling is held at the Ultimate Soccer Arena for a more controlled environment.

The Cloudbuster’s also hold monthly meetings throughout the winter months. The meetings serve as a place for exchanging tips and product recommendations. Each meeting includes members presenting their prized models as well, from planes made of dowel rods and tissue paper, to larger fiberglass planes. The meetings are the perfect starting spot for people new to the hobby, where the seasoned pilots are happy to share their knowledge and stories. The jovial conversation that carries the meetings is welcoming for even the clueless (author included).

The passion that the club members share for model planes goes beyond inclusive events. Cloudbusters are available to put on educational events and have hosted scout groups as well as Science Olympiads. In the age of drones and pre-built remote control planes, the Cloud-busters are more than happy to accommodate young Busters-to-be. A little dedication takes model planes a long way, and the Cloudbusters want nothing more than the tradition carried on.

Ferndale is a city full of givers and community people. One of the people who have made a huge contribution to our city is Michele Sibula, one of this year’s winners of the annual “Good Neighbor Award” from Ferndale Citizens for a Fair Ferndale.

Sibula is a lifelong Ferndalian; she has lived here for 54 years, along with raising her three children in Ferndale: Arik, Shea, and Lauran. After having three children go through the Ferndale Public School System, she began her volunteer work by volunteering in and out of her children’s classroom. She was an active member of the PTO, involved in fundraisers and her childrens’ volleyball, softball, and baseball games. She was also extremely invested in being a marching band parent.

Sibula quickly became a proud mother of three college graduates and, for the most part, her volunteerism as a parent came to a close. Then, tragedy struck her family. One of the most important people in Sibula’s life, her beloved cousin, passed away from breast cancer at age 41 leaving behind two children. Ironically, Sibula became inspired by the situation and, with her spirited personality, decided she could do something to help in the fight against cancer. Jackie Koivu, one of her friends and an active member of the community, asked Sibula to help with Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society’s ongoing national fundraising project.

Sibula served as the local Vice Chair of Relay for Life for one year, and later took charge of the local project after Koivu move to Florida. Now, nine years later she is still in charge of Relay for Life here in Ferndale.

When Sibula discovered she won the Good Neighbor award this year, she was surprised. “I believe God put us here on this Earth to help other people.” Sibula serves our community not for individual recognition, but out of the goodness of her heart, and to see a change in the community and the lives of others. She is very passionate about her service to the world.

Sibula is quite busy during the spring time before the annual Relay for Life event. She is constantly on the computer and phone, answering and asking questions regarding the event.

During the spring prior to Relay, she organizes many events to raise money and awareness. For example, Comedy for a Cure, Drag Queen Bingo, and many dining nights, as well as many other events that help raise money. Sibula also takes time to get sponsorships from businesses,organize team meetings, and brainstorm ideas of how to make Relay for Life As successful as it can be.

When asked why she does all of the work for this event, she stated “I want to live in a world where no mother or father has to leave their child; no child has to grow up without their parents. I want to live in a world where you don’t have to hear the words, ‘you have cancer,’ because almost everybody whether through family or friends have known someone who has been diagnosed with cancer and it makes you feel helpless.”

There are things we as a community can do to help the fight against cancer and Relay for Life is a major way that we can achieve the goal of ending cancer. Already our little Ferndale has raised over $400,000 dollars over the past nine years.

Sibula believes in what the American Cancer Society stands for, and how they help by providing money and programs for cancer patients and their families. Relay for Life is important to Sibula because it calls attention to the importance of the mission statement: Celebrate those who’ve won the battle against cancer, remember those we have lost, and fight back through research and early detection.

Sibula said that in order to prevent cancer we can do some very simple things. We can pledge not to smoke, and to eat more vegetables because those two things can help prevent cancer. In addition, go to annual doctor visits for early detection. Fighting back against cancer is not all about the money, but about prevention.

Not only does Sibula understand that cancer touches a lot of people, but she has personally been affected: her cousin and her mom is now an eight-year colon cancer survivor. Sibula humbly stated, “through volunteering I have gotten way more out of it than I have ever given.”

Ron and Pollyanna Robling have proven to be a winning husband-and-wife team! The Roblings own The Purple Peacock Boutique, located at 2750 Hilton Rd in Ferndale, alongside their estate sales business, R & S Resale which is located at 3345 Hilton.

I recently met with Ron Robling and his store manager, Liz Moritz, at The Purple Peacock. I was instantly intrigued and distracted by the wide array of attractive home furnishings and decorations! As we conversed, comfortably seated on leather couches, it became clear that the Roblings’ business efforts are paying off, and they are expanding at an impressive rate. The on-site and off-site estate sales they organize from start to finish are proving popular. Robling explained that many items in the sales are new or gently-used (often brand-name and designer goods also), so great deals are plentiful.

Even though Robling loves his work these days, it was not always his passion! He described starting out in resale/estate sales with his grandmother: “I hated it, every aspect of it,” he recalled, with a laugh. “I worked in the auto industry for many years afterwards, but returned to this business…and now I really enjoy it!”

These days, the Roblings’ main goal is to take the headache factor out of estate liquidation. In fact, some family members have joined forces with the Roblings, creating a solid team. Starting out in a small building, ff-jj-pp-manithe Roblings expanded into two buildings (off-site sales are held at 3345 Hilton. Very often, R & S have three estate sales in progress each weekend. Additionally, Robling aims to start hosting regular auctions, he added, “maybe on the first Thursday of each month.”

I asked Robling to summarize the process of estate liquidation. Many people have an estate sale at home (referred to as on-site). R & S will handle all the details of organizing the sale. However, in many cases, this is not possible and an off-site sale is necessary. With this alternate scenario, R & S will pick up all belongings and transfer them via professional movers to their sale building on Hilton. In some cases, where not many belongings are involved, sales with other clients may be combined.

What can you expect to see at a typical estate sale? Everything and anything! “We have even had vehicles for sale in the past…mostly the ypical items include furniture, clothing, artwork, jewelry, and so you must be prepared for sales to come and go in a single weekend…items do not tend to stick around” Robling warned!

Ferndale is a community built on inclusion and acceptance, with so many organizations and events made to bring people together. Rabbi Herschel Finman recognized this, and saw Ferndale as the perfect place to build and foster representation for a rapidly growing Jewish population in the area.

“I have always looked for opportunities to help and serve people in communities, especially where there were no services offered,” Rabbi Finman says. “About a year ago my wife and I saw that Ferndale was becoming a place where Jewish people were moving, but there was nothing servicing them so we decided to start getting involved.”

He and his wife, Chana, created the group Jewish Ferndale in December 2014. Through word of mouth, hosting classes and conducting events, like the Menorah lighting at the Kulik center in December 2015, Jewish Ferndale has gained a strong following. So strong that they have found themselves in need of a permanent space. “We have always had to scramble to find spaces. The library has been very gracious in offering us space,” Rabbi Finman says. “We’ve had to rent out various establishments around the city for parties the library wouldn’t be the proper medium for, so it was determined last July that we should really start looking for our own place.”

It didn’t take long for them to find 1725 Pinecrest Dr. sitting at the corner of 9 Mile. Built in 1950, this former dentist’s office needed minimal work to create a gathering spot and residence for Rabbi Finman and his wife. While they currently reside in Oak Park, it was essential that Jewish Ferndale be a warm, comfortable homeff-jj-house retreat for visitors.“We have people that come to our house all the time so this will be an extension of our home that people can come to and relax at,” Rabbi Finman says. “That will be a focus for drawing people in –to experience various mediums in a relaxed area.” The four-bedroom, two-bath space is currently being renovated to include a Jewish library with resources and books, a large commons area with a cozy, hearth fireplace, a garden and a detached garage to become an art studio. The Finman’s will reside on the second story.

“Maybe a Saturday night coffeehouse, which sounds very grandiose, but really it’s just someone itting next to the fireplace with a guitar, people sitting on couches schmoozing and drinking tea,” Rabbi Finman pictures one of many future nights within the home.

Rabbi Finman is not lacking in involvement in Metro Detroit’s Jewish community; he has been an active member for the last 30 years. Not only does he host Michigan’s only Jewish radio program, The Jewish Hour; he sends a weekly email entitled eParsha to a mailing list that has grown to include over 14,000 people in the last 16 years and produces short youtube videos, YouParsha, discussing the Jewish happenings of the week.

In all his ventures Rabbi Finman has always recognized a lack of resources or listened to the needs of the community and created a solution. He says that the success of Jewish Ferndale will follow that same path.
“We have to get people just to come in and see what they can have and what people will want and if it’s within our scope, and parameter and resources than we’re willing and open to it having those things.”
He hopes that complete renovations to Jewish Ferndale’s new home will be done by Labor Day, but has already begun conducting classes within the space.

“It will be another place for people to go, they have their home, their business and this will be the third place,” Rabbi Finman says. “The main thing is that we hope it will be warm and inviting.”

We have a prescription drug epidemic among our youth.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World discloses, “Every day in the U.S., 2,500 youth (12 to 17) abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time. In 2005, 4.4 million teenagers (aged 12 to 17) in the U.S. admitted to taking prescription painkillers, and 2.3 million took a prescription stimulant such as Ritalin. 2.2 million abused over-the-counter drugs such as cough syrup. The average age for first-time users is now 13 to 14.” How are kids getting drugs? The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports: “When asked how prescription opioids were obtained for non-medical use, more than half of 12th graders surveyed said they were given the drugs or bought them from a friend or relative.” Prescription drug abuse causes the largest percentage of deaths from drug overdoses. Of the 22,400 drug overdose deaths in the US in 2005, opioid painkillers were the most commonly found drug, accounting for 38.2 per cent of these deaths.

If you notice any of these signs, it may be time to talk to someone, starting with your teen. Approach them in a non-confrontational, non-threatening manner. The object of the conversation is to get them to talk to you, not for them to shut down. I met with Terence Brown, Executive Administrator, Shawn Coppins, Attorney at Law, and Amy Hostinsky, Master Social Worker at Brown’s Ferndale office. This is the team who keep things running smoothly at OnSite Substance Abuse Testing & New Frontier Counseling Services. We had an in-
depth discussion about youth drug culture, drugs in general, and their enormous effect on society. The infrastructure of the epidemic is vast. Its proliferation reaches from the streets to the government. It has many tiers including everything from distribution in schools to the big pharmaceutical companies. When I asked Terence Brown what his role as program administrator for both companies entails, he told me, “I deal daily with clients (court defendants and the general public,) employers, high school and college administrators and public and private sector human resources management. Myself and my business partner, Executive Director Jacob Fakhoury, create programs we hope people gravitate to and use for the betterment of their lives.”

Attorney Shawn Coppins spoke on some of his work with OnSite and New Frontier. “My most successful cases are those where I help people with addiction issues (street drugs or prescription medications) that are facing felony charges avoid incarceration. More importantly, because of my relationship with drug counseling agencies, I can often help them get into a drug treatment program (beyond what may be required by the courts.) In helping them get clean I really feel like I got a chance to save those people, not just help them with their legal problems.”

Clients of OnSite Substance Abuse Testing & New Frontier Counseling Services come from many different walks of life, and struggle with addictions to many different substances. Vicodin (also known as Norco), and Xanax are the leading drugs affecting most clients. Adder all is catching up. These are serious medications which must be prescribed by a doctor for a specific patient for a specific condition or illness. Yet these drugs make it to our neighborhoods to be sold to kids who are looking for a thrill but ultimately find an empty hole.

Kids who use drugs eventually become adults who abuse drugs. Just ask Amy Hostinsky. “At New Frontier Counseling Services, my role as master social worker includes working personally with clients on a daily basis. I provide various types of therapy and education classes for those who are on probation. Most of the clients I see on probation have charges related to alcohol (such as operating while impaired) or other drugs such as marijuana possession. I am seeing an increase in clients who are on probation after being arrested for possession of analogues (pills). Many times the clients began with a prescription but then became addicted and tried to obtain the medication from the streets. Our services include substance abuse prevention, marijuana education, outpatient substance abuse treatment, and domestic violence. I really enjoy working with people and helping them get through the probation process while maintaining sobriety.”

The Ferndale Arts & Cultural Commission (FACC) is a an official, volunteer-run organization of the City of Ferndale. Their mission is to support the arts and artists in the Ferndale area and to work with the city council to address those needs. The Commission has several ongoing programs, and some new ones this year. They sponsor Art@City Hall, a series of art shows at City Hall, an Art Fair at City Hall in June, and Salon Sundays take place every third Sunday at Dino’s featuring an hour of various musical entertainment. They also do a summer concert series at Kulick Center Park.

The FACC works with all levels of City Government to help meet the art needs of Ferndale. They also have partnered with the Chamber on the “Artist in You Scholarship Program,” hosting the awards ceremony at the Community Art Gallery at Level One Bank, and awarding two scholarships. FACC and the Chamber offf-jj-facc-group Commerce used to present separate scholarships, so they decided to combine the two under the “Artist in You” banner. The chamber will present two-dimensional art at the library and the FACC will offer three-dimensional art at Level One.

Ferndale Friends: How long has the Commission been operating?
Mark Burton: It was decommissioned several years ago, but resurrected in 2013 with a core group of five people. Today we have almost a full commission of eleven incredibly talented and dedicated people covering all aspects of the arts.

FF: What is your role in the Commission?
MB: I am the Chair of the Commission. I try and herd the cats.

FF: Can you tell me about yourself? Are you a native of Ferndale? Where did you go to school?
MB: I am originally from Matthews, North Carolina. I moved to Michigan 30 years ago, and have been in Ferndale for twenty years. I am a graduate of CCS with a major in painting. I have shown extensively in Michigan. I own a custom picture framing business, Frame.Ography. I also curate art shows at Shramm’s Meadery, and I personally represent a few artists.

FF: Tell us about Level One Bank and the art displays there.
MB: They were originally Paramount Bank, and the Community Art Gallery was an outreach to the community, but sadly it sort of floundered. When the new team from Level One came in they were committed to community outreach and revived the art gallery. I worked with Darren Bolsby, the Banking Manager, on the best way to reach out to local artists and causes. They are a fantastic team dedicated to being very involved in our community. They are doing a huge Flint water drive right now. Their commitment to Ferndale is huge.

FF: Any final words?
MB: Art is a passion. It is what I love and it keeps me going. Anything I can do to promote the arts in Ferndale, I will do. Unfortunately, art does not always pay, (but) it’s a way of life.

Album Release Party July 2 @ Loving Touch

Ask Ryan Cox if he’s in a band, and he won’t know how to answer you. While his answer won’t be “…no,” he’s still not quite sure what, exactly, you might call The Good Things.

Now, while we’re here to tell you about the release party for the Good Things’ new album, Bedroom Sessions, (hosted at The Loving Touch on July 2), we should probably elaborate more on Cox and the methods to his creative madness. The Clawson-based song tactician tries to solve the equation of human emotion with carefully constructed bursts of melodious pop-rock, rollicking with exuberant pianos, resonant with warm harmonies and percolated by peculiar percussive arrangements.

As an artist, he’s interested in irony: he scoops out the murky melodrama, bitter pills, and worn-down wills of the broken-hearted and brightens it all up with a bit of buoyancy and brio. As a musician, well, he doesn’t consider himself one. As a songwriter, he’s more of a storyteller. Cox has an associate’s degree in both liberal arts and cinematic arts and a bachelor’s in English with a minor in film studies. He’s got his eye on being a professor, someday, and currently balances time between being a dad, a musician, and a teacher.

Cox has been playing music for almost half of his 29-year-life. He started playing in bands in his late teens and formed The Good Things around 2007, with his writing partner John Morales and other collaborators. They recorded an E.P. and went on a handful of tours, flirting with regional fame and stoking some local buzz. Until…until the Good Things, which was always built around Cox’s songwriting, frayed apart and wound down to a one-man operation, in early 2010. In July of 2012, four years ago almost to the day, Cox coordinated a small orchestra of talented players to interpret a full set of songs to perform live at the Loving Touch under The Good Things moniker. After that, the Good Things seemed to disappear…

I still remember that show with fondness and a twinge of the bittersweet. The Good Things numbered about 10 players that night, each performing an eclectic array of instruments, with Cox not really at the center or in the spotlight, but elusively bobbing along around the edges with the rest of the waving energies from these palpably excited humans. It was full of life and curtained by quirks; the kind of good time pop that gets you lowering your guard and inching closer to the stage. It manifested movement, encouraged undulation and fastened fun melodies into your ear. You wanted to be in this band, after seeing them. More than that, you felt like you could be in this band…that there might not be any reason that you couldn’t come on board…

And then the set ended and I told Cox about how inspiring it all was and he said, ‘Great, I’m glad you enjoyed it, I think this is the last Good Things show ever…!’

That was four years ago. Now, Cox and I convene for coffee and ruminating/wandering conversations at least once a month and he’s remained resilient to refuse resurrecting “the band” in a traditional performing state.

THAT SAID: He continued writing and recording music over these last four years, ceaselessly…and secretly. He told few others about it, but he never stopped The Good Things as a songwriting and production entity. He not only finished this new album (mostly by himself, in bedrooms), but has also begun work on another E.P. and even two more concept albums to follow after that…

Bedroom Sessions isn’t a debut, but it will still feel like an introduction. “The new beginning,” says Cox. “The sequel is the prequel…”If we’re introducing you, then you have to know just how intense he can be about making music, not just in analyzing equalization levels of certain frequencies or in scrutinizing the meter of lyrics, but also in a more capricious sense of exploration, or experimentation. Cox wants to find new sounds. Much like Brian Wilson (of The Beach Boys) before him, he’s hearing fantastic pitches and strange timbres in his head that he’ll work meticulously toward capturing, mic-ing up outrageous riggings of everyday household materials and turning them into drums, or noisemakers of some fresh variety.

That’s why he calls it “garbage-pop…”

“Everything makes noise,” said Cox. “You can figure out how to make something good out of it if you experiment with it long enough. And I’m patient….sometimes. But I’m still keeping the songs sounding familiar.” (You’ll notice influences like The Beatles, or Black Keys, maybe the Rolling Stones or newer groups like The Generationals and The High Strung.) “But ‘garbage’ is the perfect metaphor! Open a garbage can and it’s this chaotic, collage-y mess of things! But also, some cool stuff is in there and sometimes it still works! Also, it keeps a degree of humility in there…”

“These (songs) are supposed to be representations of me…But they’re very cryptic, and play with fantasy and alternate history. I can’t make them sound perfect because I’m far from that capacity, in terms of audio engineering. But, if they’re representations of me, they should reflect the flaws, the benefits, the interesting things, the intriguing things; they should all be there, in their own modes, whether it’s my performance on the guitar, or me forming a kick drum sound out of nine different things. It’s like…I’m always in rough-draft mode! Then I get to the end and ask: What if I changed THIS? And what if I changed that!??”

And that’s the main reason it’s taken Cox four years to put out this record; every other month or so, he’s changed something. Or worse, he’s changed lots of things. But it’s all Good Things. I can’t even get into how elaborate and fantastically scoped his next three albums will be; I’d much rather you start that conversation with Cox in person, at the Loving Touch on July 2nd, when eight new performers will be backing him up and interpreting the Good Things’ new songs.

And even as you read this, he’s probably in his makeshift studio, neurotically doubting his decision to finally come back. But it’s gonna be good! Whether he believes it or not; it’s gonna be good!

NATIONWIDE, THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE taking care of the nearly 5.3 million individuals currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. By the year 2030, that number will soar as 71 million individuals will reach age 65 and older. Despite those staggering statistics, Alzheimer’s and dementia caretakers often feel isolated in their struggles.

I am one of those individuals living with dementia. My partner, who I am grateful for everyday, has the stressful job of being my caretaker. While we both noticed the signs around the same time that my memory ff-jj-bcwas failing, and I no longer am able to work, I am fortunate to remain fairly active right now because I reside in a walk-able town. Living in Ferndale, in a tight-knit community where people help one another and the streets are easy to navigate has been good for me thus far. In time, my memory will fail more and life will get harder; it’s my partner whom I most concerned about.

Despite our awareness of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, no one can ever be fully prepared to watch a parent or loved one fade away – or experience losing their own memories. No one can understand the fear, fatigue, alienation and stress this brings until they are in it.

In Michigan, more than 180,000 individuals like myself are living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

Families around the state who are taking care of their loved ones are dealing with insurmountable stress everyday. The saving grace for many is nonprofit organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association of Michigan,whose mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; provide and enhance care and support for all affected and reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Their resources and support groups help those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and their caretakers, develop relationships with others who understand their situation as they go through the same day-to-day struggles. It also is where many find the encouragement to stay strong and obtain the resources to get much needed help.

Being able to call the Association for information about respite care, emotional support and advocacy is crucial and will continue to be for many as loved ones age. The support groups have been very helpful for me.

This year, for the third consec-utive year, the Association wass listed on the Michigan Voluntary Contribution Schedule. This annual tax form provides tax-payers with the option to contribute all or part of their tax return directly to the organiz-ation in order help Michigan families who have no place else to turn.

If you know a caretaker, or someone living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, please reach out to them and offer your listening ear. Offer to sit with a caretaker’s loved one so they can have those crucial few minutes alone to run an errand or even take a shower. Bring them a meal. Also, if they aren’t using the services of the Alzheimer’s Association of Michigan already, providing them with the organization’s phone number or www.alz.org/gmc may be the single best thing you can do for them.

DR. ANGELO ZERVOS’ OUTSTANDING reputation locally was no secret to me in advance of this interview. He has also ecently performed some extensive dentistry work on two close friends. So in my mind, he already had something akin to superhero status!

Zervos has a disarmingly personable manner, combined with an enthusiastic approach. Working hard in the front office are his long-time employees, Chris McDaniel and Kim Leamon, along with several experienced dental hygienists.

What was the special pull that drew Dr. Zervos into dentistry? He recalled, “…I always wanted to be a doctor…and I also liked to build things and work with my hands.” He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1977 with distinction, and then progressed on to graduate in 1983 from the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School. He briefly described his dedicated work approach, “…I have worked as a dentist since graduating…it is a huge part of my life and my patients are like family to me…some of them have been with me for 30 years! I truly consider myself a Ferndale dentist…” With a smile, Dr. Zervos said, “…I feel like a grandfather, because patients will bring their children, and after the years pass, they are bringing in their children too!”

Dr. Zervos’ wife, Mary, grew up in the Ferndale area (wheareas, he grew up in Detroit), and so they were both happy to live and base their careers here. They were married in 1986 and ave four children, who are all doing very well, …although none are following in my dentistry footsteps yet!” he jokingly added.

Another part of Dr.Zervos’ overall mission in life is that of education; he taught pediatric dentistry (as an Associate Dean at the University of Detroit) for ten years, and looks forward to teaching more in the future. He is currently an active member in numerous professional organizations and educational programs, and likes to attend ongoing educational classes with his staff. The whole office building was acquired in November of 1996 with one of his best friends of 50 years, a lawyer named William Orlow. Together, they designed the space completely, according to their separate career needs. He ecent additions are the high-tech, adjustable LED lights in each room. There is also a state-of-the-art lab present, plus all-digital x-ray equipment. Clearly, no expense has been spared in keeping the office completely clean, updated and patient-friendly.

Zervos has seen quite a few changes/advances in the field over the course of his career!Implants have been revolutionized to be a lot more comfortable, and current insurance plans cover a lot more than previously. Oral cancer has been on the rise, so he ensures his patients receive an oral cancer screening. Cosmetic dentistry has also increased in popularity, and quite aside from the health benefits of good oral hygiene, a great smile can certainly boost confidence. Dr. Zervos recalled one patient who had been a soldier. “Once his teeth were redone, he changed his whole life in a healthy way…it was great to see it!”

Zervos firmly believes in giving back to the community. For example, he volunteers hours of dentistry time with FernCare (the local clinic for low-income/uninsured patients). Also, he was involved for 15 years in a co-op program that the Ferndale High School ran. “Many of these high-schoolers went on to pursue a career in dentistry!” Dr. Zervos added. He is particularly proud of a young woman that he mentored for years, Alexandria Pappas, who is entering the University of Detroit Mercy Dental this fall.
